Leo season doesn't begin on a fixed calendar day. It starts the moment the Sun reaches 0° Leo, which slips about six hours later each year, then jumps back a day at each leap year. That's why in recent years it has started on July 22 or 23 in UTC, and a day either side in some time zones.

Where Leo season falls in the year

Leo season is the heart of the quarter Cancer season opened. It starts about a month after the June solstice, when the Sun reaches 0° Leo around July 22–23, and runs until the Sun enters Virgo around August 22–23 — high summer in the Northern Hemisphere and midwinter in the Southern.

Halfway through, with the Sun near 15° Leo in early August, falls the cross-quarter day between the solstice and the September equinox — Lammas, or Lughnasadh, in the old calendars, the festival of the first harvest. Like every fixed sign, Leo is a season where the quarter stops changing and simply burns at full strength.

What Leo season actually is

For about thirty-one days the Sun travels through the fifth thirty degrees of the zodiac — Leo, the one sign the Sun itself rules. It's the backdrop of the month for everyone. Leo is a fire sign associated with creativity, play, romance, confidence and being seen for who you are.

In plain terms, it's the month to make something, share it and enjoy the attention — to have fun without needing a reason.

What to expect during Leo season

Self-expression comes more easily this month: performing, creating, dating, celebrating, leading. It's a good time to share your work, take a holiday, and let people see what you love. What's harder is humility — pride bruises easily, and it can be tempting to need the spotlight. None of that is a rule. If you've been hiding a project or a feeling, Leo season is a fair time to bring it into the light.

Leo season FAQ

When exactly does Leo season start?

Leo season begins the instant the Sun reaches 0° Leo. In recent years that has fallen on July 22 or 23 in UTC, and a day either side in some time zones; the table above shows the exact time in your own zone. It then runs about 31 days, until the Sun enters Virgo around August 22 or 23.

Why does the date change every year?

Because it is tied to the Sun's exact position, not the calendar. Earth's orbit isn't a whole number of days, so the moment the Sun reaches 0° Leo drifts about six hours later each year, then jumps back roughly a day when a leap year adds February 29. That's why Leo season doesn't start on the same date every year.

Why is Leo season the Sun's own season?

In traditional astrology each sign has a ruling planet, and Leo's is the Sun. So in Leo season the Sun travels through the sign it rules — which is why astrologers read these weeks as the year at full brightness, and why the season is linked with confidence, warmth and visibility.

Does Leo season affect me if I'm not a Leo?

Yes — it's the backdrop for everyone, not only Leo Suns. For about a month the Sun sits in one house of your chart and lights up that area of life. Which house depends on your rising sign; the table above maps it for all twelve.

What's the difference between Leo season and Leo the sign?

Leo the sign is a 30° slice of the zodiac and, for some people, where their Sun, Moon or rising sits. Leo season is simply the month or so each year when the Sun is travelling through that slice — a timing, not a birth placement.
