Cancer Season

Cancer season begins at the exact moment of the June solstice — the instant the Sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky and enters 0° Cancer. The two are one event seen two ways: astronomers call it the solstice, astrologers call it the start of Cancer season.

It opens the second quarter of the astrological year. In the Northern Hemisphere this is midsummer's longest day; south of the equator the same instant is the winter solstice and the shortest day — but the zodiac counts it as 0° Cancer just the same.

That turning point is why astrologers call Cancer a cardinal sign, like Aries, Libra and Capricorn: each one starts a quarter of the year at an equinox or a solstice.

For about thirty-one days the Sun travels through the fourth thirty degrees of the zodiac — the sign of Cancer, ruled by the Moon. It's the shared backdrop of the month for everyone. Cancer is a water sign associated with home, family, belonging, memory and the people who make you feel safe.

In plain terms, it's the month to look after your base: the people you live with, the place you come back to, and your own need for care.

Feelings sit closer to the surface this month, and home tends to pull your attention — family plans, moving, nesting, cooking for people you love. It's a good time to repair close relationships and to ask for the care you need. What's harder is distance: criticism can sting more, and it's easy to retreat into your shell. None of that is a rule.
