Waxing Moon
"Waxing" means growing — a Waxing Moon is any point between New Moon and Full Moon, when the amount of Moon visibly lit up increases every night. It runs through four stages in order: Waxing Crescent (a thin sliver right after new moon), First Quarter (exactly half-lit), Waxing Gibbous (more than half but not full), and then Full Moon. What the Waxing Moon means
In the Northern Hemisphere the light appears on the right side of the Moon and grows from there; in the Southern Hemisphere it's the left. This buildup is where most "moon phase" folk sayings come from — the idea of the waxing half as a time for starting things and the waning half as a time for finishing them — a cultural pattern layered on top of a purely mechanical fact: the Moon's changing angle relative to the sun as it orbits Earth. A full waxing-to-waning-and-back cycle takes about 29.5 days, called a lunar month.
