Myth, shadow work, and the stories we outgrow

  • 10 years of practice

Specialization: Writer, ritualist, and fellow work-in-progress. If this found you at the right moment, that’s not an accident. My witchcraft is grief-soaked and tender, so I write for the ones who feel too tired, too scattered, or too human to be spiritual.

Experience & approach

I have spent more than thirty years in hands-on wildlife rehabilitation and livestock management on the Texas Gulf Coast. I'm a licensed Texas wildlife rehabilitation subpermittee, vice president of an exotics rescue, and an entrepreneur managing three separate businesses. I also write fiction and memoirs, and I publish The Feathered Chronicles on Substack, where I go deeper into myth studies and shadow work.

I start with the sources. Myths reach us through translators, scribes, and centuries of editing, so I read across versions, note where they disagree, and say so instead of pretending there's one true telling. Then I ask what the story is willing to say that we usually are not. I treat shadow work as a practice, not a performance: slow, unglamorous, and honest about what's hard. I don't offer promises or cures. When a topic is heavy, I say so up front so you can decide how close to stand to it. Any prompts or practices I share are invitations. Take what helps and leave the rest.

About the author

Bio

My writing is storytelling and reflection, not medical or mental health advice. If you're struggling, please reach out to a professional. In the US, you can call or text 988 anytime.

I'm Phoenix Kate, and I write about mythology and shadow work for people who are tired of being told to think positive and move on. The old stories were never meant to be pretty. Morrigan, Persephone, Lilith, Hecate, and Loki have lasted thousands of years because they hold what polite culture avoids: rage, grief, desire, betrayal, and the descent before anything new begins. I read across sources, note where versions disagree, and refuse to flatten a goddess into a quote graphic. I grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast and still live there. Working with frightened and hurting animals taught me how fear lives in a body and that care is mostly showing up again and again. Expect myth retellings, archetype studies, and journaling prompts you can take or leave. I'm a writer, not a therapist, and nothing here replaces professional care. If you've ever felt too much or too honest for the room, pull up a chair.
