Mercury Retrograde

Updated

Three or four times a year Mercury appears to move backwards through the zodiac. Here are the exact dates in your own time zone, the shadow period on either side, what the retrograde actually means, and everything our astrologers have written about it.

Is Mercury retrograde right now?

No

Not yet — but Mercury is in its pre-retrograde shadow. It turns retrograde in Scorpio on , .

Every Mercury retrograde, 2026–2027

Each Mercury retrograde runs about three weeks, from the moment Mercury turns retrograde to the moment it turns direct. Times are shown in your own time zone with the exact degree of each station; where a cycle crosses a sign boundary, the arrow shows it.

Mercury never actually moves backwards

What you see is an optical effect, not a real reversal. Mercury circles the Sun in just 88 days, far faster than Earth, and three or four times a year it catches up with us and passes on the inside track. For a few weeks around that pass it appears to slow, stop and slide backwards against the stars, then loop forward again. So if you're asking whether Mercury retrograde is real: the motion is a genuine, predictable astronomical event; whether it shapes your week is a question of belief, and we won't pretend otherwise.

It happens about three times a year and lasts roughly three weeks each time — so Mercury spends close to a fifth of every year retrograde. That makes it the most frequent retrograde of all, and the one people notice most.

So why does it look like it does?

Because we watch Mercury from a moving Earth. As Mercury sweeps past us on its smaller, faster orbit, our line of sight to it runs forward, doubles back, then runs forward again — here is the same motion drawn out.

Why Mercury appears to move backwardsThe Sun at the centre with Mercury on the inner orbit and Earth on the outer one, at five equal moments in time. Lines of sight from Earth past Mercury to the distant stars show Mercury appearing to move forward, loop backward, then move forward again — an illusion caused by Mercury lapping Earth on its faster inner orbit. The distant starsSun111222333444555

Positions 1–5 are equal steps in time. Watch the apparent position on the star band: it moves forward from 1 to 2, loops backward across 2–3–4 (the retrograde), then forward again to 5. Not to scale.

The Mercury retrograde shadow period

Every retrograde has a shadow on either side: the stretch of zodiac Mercury crosses three times. The pre-retrograde shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; the post-retrograde shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde. For Mercury each shadow lasts about two weeks, so the whole cycle runs close to two months. Many astrologers feel the themes begin surfacing in the pre-shadow and settle in the post-shadow.

What to expect during Mercury retrograde

Traditionally, Mercury retrograde is a time to review rather than launch: revisit, revise, reconnect, back up. Messages get crossed, plans shift, old names resurface. None of that is a curse — it's a nudge to slow down and check your work.

Read contracts twice, confirm times and places, save your files and give conversations a little extra patience. If something important genuinely can't wait, go ahead; just build in room for a delay. It's a good window to finish things you already started, and a gentler one for starting something brand new.

Which house Mercury retrograde falls in for you

The same retrograde lands in a different house of every birth chart, and the house shows which part of life it stirs up — work, home, money, love, friendships. This time Mercury turns retrograde at 20°59′ Scorpio and backs up to 05°02′ Scorpio. Build your birth chart and find the house that holds those degrees: that is where this retrograde asks you to slow down and review.

Mercury retrograde FAQ

When does this Mercury retrograde end?

Mercury isn't retrograde right now. The next Mercury retrograde runs from , to , , with its shadow from to .

Is Mercury retrograde real?

The apparent backward motion is real and observable, but Mercury never actually reverses. It's an optical effect: three or four times a year Mercury laps Earth on its faster inner orbit, and for a few weeks the planet appears to slide backwards against the stars. The astronomy is real; whether it affects your week is a matter of belief, and we say so plainly.

How often does Mercury go retrograde, and how long does it last?

About three times a year, for roughly three weeks each time, plus a shadow period of about two weeks on either side. That means Mercury is retrograde or in shadow for a sizeable share of any year — it is common, not rare.

What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period?

The shadow is the stretch of zodiac Mercury travels three times: once before the station (the pre-retrograde shadow), once retrograde, and once after it turns direct (the post-retrograde shadow). Many astrologers treat the shadow as a softer version of the retrograde itself — themes start surfacing before the official dates.

Should I avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde?

There's no rule that says you can't. The traditional advice is simply to read the fine print, confirm details and expect the occasional delay — sensible any time. If a decision is right, a retrograde won't make it wrong; it just rewards double-checking.

Why do different sites show different dates?

Two reasons: time zones, and whether a site counts the shadow period. A station that falls near midnight lands on different calendar days around the world, and sites that include the shadow show a longer window. Our dates are computed from planetary ephemerides to the minute and shown in your own time zone.
