Jupiter Retrograde

Updated

Once a year Jupiter appears to move backwards through the zodiac for about four months — the retrograde astrologers tie to growth, luck and belief. Here are the exact dates in your own time zone, the shadow period on either side, what Jupiter retrograde means, and everything our astrologers have written about it.

Is Jupiter retrograde right now?

No

Not yet — but Jupiter is in its pre-retrograde shadow. It turns retrograde in Leo on , .

Every Jupiter retrograde, 2026–2027

Jupiter turns retrograde once every 13 months and stays retrograde for about four months, so it is retrograde roughly a third of the time. Times are shown in your own time zone with the exact degree of each station; where a cycle crosses a sign boundary, the arrow shows it.

What our astrologers wrote about Jupiter retrograde

Jupiter never actually moves backwards

What you see is an optical effect, not a real reversal. Jupiter takes almost 12 years to circle the Sun. Once every 13 months Earth, on the faster inside track, overtakes it, and for about four months around that pass Jupiter appears to halt, drift backwards against the stars and then resume its course. The motion is real and predictable; whether it slows your luck is a matter of belief.

The middle of every Jupiter retrograde is also when Jupiter is nearest to Earth and brightest — the best weeks of the year to see its moons through binoculars.

So why does it look like it does?

Because we watch Jupiter from a moving Earth. As we overtake it on our smaller, faster orbit — like passing a slower car on the motorway — our line of sight to Jupiter runs forward, doubles back, then runs forward again. Here is the same motion drawn out.

Why Jupiter appears to move backwardsThe Sun at the centre with Earth on the inner orbit and Jupiter on the outer one, at five equal moments in time. Lines of sight from Earth past Jupiter to the distant stars show Jupiter appearing to move forward, loop backward, then move forward again — an illusion caused by Earth overtaking the slower outer planet. The distant starsSun111222333444555

Positions 1–5 are equal steps in time. Watch the apparent position on the star band: it moves forward from 1 to 2, loops backward across 2–3–4 (the retrograde), then forward again to 5. Not to scale.

The Jupiter retrograde shadow period

Every retrograde has a shadow on either side: the stretch of zodiac Jupiter crosses three times. The pre-retrograde shadow begins when Jupiter first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; the post-retrograde shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde. For Jupiter each shadow lasts about three months, so the whole cycle runs close to ten months.

What to expect during Jupiter retrograde

Jupiter retrograde is traditionally a time when growth turns inward. Instead of new opportunities arriving from outside, it's a stretch to review your beliefs, your plans for expansion and where your luck has really come from.

Astrologers often suggest using it to study, reflect and consolidate rather than overextend — finish the course, revisit the big plan, check that what you're building is still what you want. Nothing good is cancelled; it's simply a quieter phase of the same growth.

Which house Jupiter retrograde falls in for you

The same retrograde lands in a different house of every birth chart, and the house shows which part of life it stirs up — work, home, money, love, friendships. This time Jupiter turns retrograde at 27°01′ Leo and backs up to 17°00′ Leo. Build your birth chart and find the house that holds those degrees: that is where this retrograde asks you to slow down and review.

Jupiter retrograde FAQ

When does this Jupiter retrograde end?

Jupiter isn't retrograde right now. The next Jupiter retrograde runs from , to , , with its shadow from to .

What does Jupiter retrograde mean?

In astrology Jupiter is growth, optimism and belief. Retrograde, that expansion is read as turning inward: less about new doors opening, more about understanding the opportunities you already have. Astronomically, it simply means Earth is overtaking Jupiter.

Does Jupiter retrograde take away luck?

No — astrologers describe it as luck working more quietly. It's a good season for inner growth, study and second chances at something you once let pass, rather than for counting on a windfall.

How often does Jupiter go retrograde, and how long does it last?

Once a year — every 13 months — for about four months at a time, with a shadow of about three months on either side.

What is the Jupiter retrograde shadow period?

The shadow is the stretch of zodiac Jupiter covers three times: once before it turns retrograde (the pre-retrograde shadow), once retrograde, and once after it turns direct (the post-retrograde shadow). For Jupiter the whole cycle runs close to ten months.

Why do different sites show different dates?

Two reasons: time zones, and whether a site counts the shadow period. A station that falls near midnight lands on different calendar days around the world, and sites that include the shadow show a longer window. Our dates are computed from planetary ephemerides to the minute and shown in your own time zone.
