Two Planets Walking Backward Together

The Venus and Mercury Retrograde Guide: Love, money, and messages to leave unsent.

Right now, two planets are moving backward at once. Mercury stationed retrograde on October 24, and Venus has been retrograde since October 3. Both stay backward until November 13. That is a double retrograde, and it explains a lot about this week: the text you almost sent, the old name that showed up out of nowhere, the budget that suddenly needs a second look.

This autumn, Venus and Mercury are retrograde at the same time, and both began the work in Scorpio. Venus stationed retrograde on October 3. Mercury joined her on October 24. Venus has already slipped backward into Libra, and the two planets turn direct within about a day of each other, on November 13 and 14.

That overlap is why this one feels heavier than an ordinary Mercury retrograde. Mercury governs what we say, read, sign, and remember. Venus governs what we love, what we value, and what we believe we are worth. When both are under review in the sign of secrets, depth, and unfinished business, the question is rarely "why is my email broken?" It is "what have I been agreeing to that I never truly agreed to?"

Venus last retrograded through Scorpio and Libra eight years ago, in October 2018. If you remember how that autumn felt, you may recognize the terrain.

A note on how I use astrology: it is a lens, not a verdict. A retrograde cannot make anything happen to you. What it does is hand us a calendar for looking back, a six-week permission slip to slow down, reread, repair, and tell the truth. Take what is useful. Leave what is not.

The rest of this guide walks through the dates, what each planet is asking of you, the myths that hold this transit, and a shadow work practice you can start today.

Dates at a Glance

Both retrogrades end on November 13 in US time zones. Dates below use US time; Venus's direct station falls on November 14 on UTC and UK calendars.

  • October 3: Venus stations retrograde at 8° Scorpio.

  • October 23: The Sun enters Scorpio, and Venus meets the Sun at 0° Scorpio in a cazimi, the midpoint of her retrograde and a reset point in the cycle.

  • October 24: Mercury stations retrograde at 20° Scorpio, a few hours after the cazimi.

  • October 25: Venus backs out of Scorpio and into Libra, where she finishes the retrograde.

  • October 30: Mercury squares Mars, one last jolt of friction.

  • November 4: Mercury cazimi at 12° Scorpio, a mid-retrograde moment of clarity.

  • November 9: New Moon in Scorpio.

  • November 13: Mercury stations direct at 5° Scorpio, and Venus stations direct at 22° Libra.

  • December 4: Venus crosses back into Scorpio.

  • Mid-December: Venus's retrograde shadow, the stretch where things are still settling, runs to about December 15.

Venus Retrograde: The Worth Audit

Venus retrograde is an audit of what you value and what you quietly accept. Roughly every eighteen months, for about six weeks, she turns back through the territory she just crossed and asks whether you meant it.

The first half of this retrograde happened in Scorpio, which is not Venus's easy ground. Instead of charm and ease, she gets intensity: jealousy, possessiveness, power struggles, and a hunger to know what is really underneath. Anything you have been politely ignoring in love, money, or friendship probably got louder. That is Venus refusing to keep decorating a room with a crack in the foundation.

On October 23, Venus met the Sun at the exact midpoint of the retrograde, a cazimi, which many astrologers treat as a brief reset. If you saw something clearly that night, write it down. You will want it later.

On October 25, she slid back into Libra, her home sign, and the question changed. It is no longer "how deep does this go?" It is "is this fair?" Libra rules balance, agreements, and partnership. This is the stretch to look at where giving and receiving have gone lopsided: who carries the emotional labor, who pays, who compromises, who gets to be the easy one. Astrologers often link this stretch with legal matters, separations, and questions of fairness, so do not be surprised if a long-standing imbalance finally asks for a name.

Old flames, old friends, and old money questions also have a way of resurfacing under Venus retrograde. You do not owe every message an answer. Before you reply, ask what the contact is actually for: closure, comfort, or a real second look. Those are very different invitations, and only one of them deserves your time.

Love gets the same treatment under Venus retrograde. An old love, an old friendship, an old version of yourself may come back around this week. Do not panic, and do not pounce. Ask what is actually returning. Sometimes it is a lesson, coming back so you can see how far you have come. Sometimes it is a door you already closed, checking whether the latch held. You can tell them apart by how you feel in your body when it shows up. Relief, warmth, a quiet sense of recognition: that is a lesson. Dread, tightness, the old ache in the same old place: that is a door. You do not owe a door a second opening just because it knocked.

The work of this retrograde is to find out what you still choose, on purpose, with your eyes open.

Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio: What Comes Back Up

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio is a dig. Mercury is information, language, and agreements. Scorpio is what is hidden, owed, and unspoken. Put them together and you get a three-week stretch where the things nobody said out loud start asking to be said.

Mercury stationed retrograde on October 24 at 20° Scorpio and backs up to 5° Scorpio by November 13. That means he is retracing ground from early October, including the exact meeting of Mercury and Venus at 8° Scorpio on October 7. Conversations, promises, and half-formed decisions from that week are the ones most likely to circle back for another look.

Here is what that tends to look like on the ground:

  • A text or email you misread the first time, and now read very differently.

  • A conversation you ended too quickly, and the part you left out.

  • A document, contract, or bill with a detail you skimmed.

  • A secret, yours or someone else's, that is no longer comfortable to carry.

  • Old files, old messages, and old versions of yourself turning up where you did not expect them.

Scorpio is a sign of investigation, so lean into that. Reread before you reply. Ask the second question, the one underneath the first. Listen for what a person is not saying. Anyone who has handled injured wildlife knows that animals hide pain until they cannot, and people are not so different. The real information is rarely in the first answer.

Mercury retrograde is also, to be plain about it, a good time to back up your files and double-check your calendar. Scorpio just makes the stakes a little more personal than a missed flight.

Messages to Leave Unsent

This is the season for messages to leave unsent, just for now. If a text feels urgent at midnight, it will still be true in the morning, and it will be kinder then. Write the draft if you need to get it out of your head. Let it sit. Read it back the next day and ask one question: am I saying this to be understood, or to be finished with the feeling? If it is the second one, the feeling will pass, and the message does not need to go with it. The same goes for the message you receive. A late reply is not always a rejection. Sometimes it is just a retrograde week, and a person doing their best with a scrambled inbox.

Retrograde does not mean everything breaks. It means everything gets reviewed. Mercury rules messages, plans, and small daily logistics. Venus rules love, money, and what you value. When both turn back at the same time, the review doubles up. Old conversations return. Old feelings resurface. Old spending habits ask for another look. All of this is an invitation to decide again, with clearer eyes.

The Myth Thread: Inanna's Seven Gates and the Road of Hermes

This transit has two old stories living inside it, and they belong together. The first is the descent of Inanna, the Sumerian queen of heaven, whom the ancients tied to the planet Venus. Inanna leaves her throne and travels to the underworld, the realm of her sister Ereshkigal. At each of seven gates, the gatekeeper makes her surrender something she wears: her crown, her beads, her breastplate, her ring, her measuring rod, her necklace, and finally her royal robe. By the time she stands before her sister, she has nothing left that says who she was above ground.

Then Ereshkigal fixes her with the gaze of death, and Inanna's body is hung on a hook for three days. Many writers have linked those days to the stretch when Venus vanishes into the Sun's glare, which is exactly what happens at the cazimi at the midpoint of this retrograde. She does not stay there. Helpers slip in beneath the notice of the queen of the underworld, do the plain, patient work of sitting with Ereshkigal in her pain, and Inanna is restored. She comes back up through the gates changed, and not without cost.

Read as a map of Venus retrograde, the lesson is blunt. Before you can come back with a clearer sense of your worth, you have to find out which of your adornments were holding up the whole structure. Crown, role, reputation, the person you perform for other people. What is left when those are set down at the gate?

The second story is quieter. Hermes, the Greek Mercury, is the god of thresholds and the guide of souls. He is one of the very few beings allowed to travel between the living world and the underworld and return. In the old tale of Demeter and her daughter, it is Hermes who is sent down to bring Persephone back up.

So Mercury retrograde in Scorpio is not just a glitch in your inbox. It is a guide who knows the road down and the road back. Venus does the descent. Mercury helps you find the way out and put words to what you found.

Shadow Work Practice: Setting Things Down at the Gate

A gentle word before you start: go slowly. This is not a race to the bottom of anything. You are allowed to skip a prompt, stop mid-sentence, or come back another day. If something heavy rises, put your feet on the floor, drink some water, and step away. Shadow work is not a substitute for therapy or crisis support. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 in the US.

Set aside twenty minutes. Write by hand if you can. Take one prompt per sitting rather than all four at once.

  1. Worth. Where am I accepting less than I would want for someone I love? What would I say to that person if they were in my place?

  2. The unsaid. What have I not said, and what do I fear would happen if I said it? What is it costing me to keep carrying it?

  3. What I am owed. What am I owed, whether it is an apology, repayment, acknowledgment, or rest? Have I asked for it in plain words, or only hoped it would be noticed?

  4. Done carrying. What am I ready to set down? What did I pick up because nobody else would, and who could carry it with me instead?

If you want a ritual to go with it, try the Seven Gates: List seven things you wear in your daily life, such as roles, titles, reputations, and the easy version of yourself you offer when you do not feel safe. Read the list slowly. For each one, ask whether you would pick it up again on purpose. Cross out the ones you are done with. Keep the ones you choose.

Close by writing one sentence that begins with "This retrograde, I am willing to..." Finish it with something small enough to actually do this week. Then eat something warm and go outside for a few minutes. Descents need a way back up, and the body is part of the road.

A Small, Honest Money Review

Venus retrograde is a terrible time for a big, irreversible purchase made on a feeling, and a very good time for a small, honest review. Look at what you spent in the last month, not to scold yourself, but to see what actually fed you. Keep the spending that did. Set down the spending that only filled a hole for an evening. If a big purchase can wait until after November 13, let it wait. If it cannot wait, read the fine print twice, and get a second pair of eyes on it. That is not superstition. That is just good practice in a week when details like to slip.

Practical Dos and Don'ts

The working rule of this retrograde is simple: finish, review, and repair, and save big new beginnings for after November 13. These are traditional cautions, not curses. You still have a life to run.

Do

  • Back up your phone, laptop, and anything you would hate to lose.

  • Reread before you sign or send, especially numbers, dates, and names.

  • Confirm plans twice and build extra buffer into travel and deadlines.

  • Finish things: the half-written draft, the overdue conversation, the apology you have been circling.

  • Keep written records of agreements, including who said what and when.

  • Notice which people and patterns keep showing up, and which ones leave you feeling smaller.

Don't

  • Make an irreversible relationship decision in a single hot moment if you can wait a few days.

  • Rush large purchases, especially anything tied to appearance or luxury.

  • Treat every returning ex or old friend as a sign. Sometimes a message is just a message.

  • Assume silence means agreement. Ask, and write down the answer.

Traditional advice also says to hold off on weddings, major contracts, and elective cosmetic procedures until Venus is direct. If yours is already on the calendar, nothing is cursed. Read the fine print twice, ask your questions out loud, and keep going.

And if you are in the middle of a hard stretch with a person or a decision, give yourself the grace of time. Very little that matters has to be settled before November 13.

A Small Daily Pause

Once a day, before you send anything important, pause and name the three things: what am I saying, what do I actually want from this, and can it wait until tomorrow? If it can wait, let it. If it cannot, send the shorter version. Shorter is almost always kinder in retrograde season.

Mid-Retrograde Check-In Points

Two dates in early November are good places to stop and take stock.

November 4: Mercury cazimi. Mercury sits at the heart of the Sun at 12° Scorpio, a short window of clarity in the middle of the muddle. Venus also forms a supportive sextile to Jupiter the same day. If there is something you have been unable to say clearly, this is a kind day to try. Reread what you wrote last week and see what stands out.

November 9: New Moon in Scorpio. Retrograde new moons are for tending, not launching. Instead of starting something, take ten quiet minutes and write three lines: what I am carrying forward, what I am leaving behind, and what I still need to say. Put the page somewhere you will find it again after the retrogrades end.

Coming Out the Other Side

When Mercury and Venus turn direct on November 13 and 14, nothing snaps back to normal overnight. Mercury needs a couple of weeks to regain full speed, and Venus carries her retrograde shadow until about December 15, crossing back into Scorpio on December 4. Treat that stretch as a settling period. Let what you learned land before you act on it.

When you are ready, act on what you found. Have the conversation you wrote out. Ask for the thing you are owed. Reach out to the people you decided, on purpose, to keep. Let the rest go quietly, without a speech.

Remember Inanna. She did not come back up the same way she went down, and she did not come back empty-handed. She returned having stood in the dark and survived it, and she knew a great deal more about what she was worth.

Here is the hopeful part, and it matters: Retrogrades return things because some things deserve a second chance, and some things deserve a proper goodbye. Both are useful. Both are a kind of harvest. You do not have to fix your whole love life, your whole budget, and your whole inbox before November 13. You only have to stop, look, and choose on purpose instead of on impulse.

Leave the unsent message unsent. Let the old thing come back, look it in the eye, and decide. That is the whole survival guide: slow down, tell the truth kindly, and let the review do its work.

You do not have to earn your way through this transit. You only have to be willing to look. The gates open in both directions, and Mercury knows the road back.

Be gentle with yourself and honest with the people you love.
