Saturn Retrograde

Updated

Once a year Saturn appears to move backwards through the zodiac for about four and a half months — the retrograde astrologers tie to responsibility, limits and the structures that hold life together. Here are the exact dates in your own time zone, the shadow period on either side, what Saturn retrograde means, and everything our astrologers have written about it.

Every Saturn retrograde, 2026–2027

Saturn turns retrograde every 12½ months and stays retrograde for about 140 days — well over a third of every year. Times are shown in your own time zone with the exact degree of each station; where a cycle crosses a sign boundary, the arrow shows it.

What our astrologers wrote about Saturn retrograde

Saturn never actually moves backwards

What you see is an optical effect, not a real reversal. Saturn, the most distant planet you can see without a telescope, takes about 29½ years to circle the Sun. Once a year Earth overtakes it on the inside track, and for about four and a half months Saturn appears to stand still, slip backwards against the stars and then move on. The motion is real and entirely predictable; whether it tests you is a matter of belief.

Saturn is retrograde for well over a third of every year, so a Saturn retrograde is less an event than a season — one that astrologers read slowly, over months rather than days.

So why does it look like it does?

Because we watch Saturn from a moving Earth. As we overtake it on our smaller, faster orbit — like passing a slower car on the motorway — our line of sight to Saturn runs forward, doubles back, then runs forward again. Here is the same motion drawn out.

Why Saturn appears to move backwardsThe Sun at the centre with Earth on the inner orbit and Saturn on the outer one, at five equal moments in time. Lines of sight from Earth past Saturn to the distant stars show Saturn appearing to move forward, loop backward, then move forward again — an illusion caused by Earth overtaking the slower outer planet. The distant starsSun111222333444555

Positions 1–5 are equal steps in time. Watch the apparent position on the star band: it moves forward from 1 to 2, loops backward across 2–3–4 (the retrograde), then forward again to 5. Not to scale.

The Saturn retrograde shadow period

Every retrograde has a shadow on either side: the stretch of zodiac Saturn crosses three times. The pre-retrograde shadow begins when Saturn first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; the post-retrograde shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde. For Saturn each shadow lasts about three and a half months, so the whole cycle runs close to a year — Saturn is almost always somewhere in a retrograde cycle.

What to expect during Saturn retrograde

Saturn retrograde is traditionally a time to revisit responsibilities, commitments and the structures holding your life together. Pressure from outside eases, so attention turns to the work only you can do: the habits, boundaries and promises that need reinforcing.

Astrologers often suggest reviewing long-term plans, finishing what you've committed to and fixing whatever has started to crack, rather than taking on new obligations. Progress may feel slow, but what you rebuild now tends to last.

Which house Saturn retrograde falls in for you

The same retrograde lands in a different house of every birth chart, and the house shows which part of life it stirs up — work, home, money, love, friendships. This time Saturn turns retrograde at 14°45′ Aries and backs up to 07°56′ Aries. Build your birth chart and find the house that holds those degrees: that is where this retrograde asks you to slow down and review.

Saturn retrograde FAQ

When does this Saturn retrograde end?

This Saturn retrograde ends when Saturn turns direct on , at the degree it backs up to in Aries. Its post-retrograde shadow runs on until , when Saturn is back where the retrograde began.

What does Saturn retrograde mean?

In astrology Saturn is structure, discipline and the lessons that take time. Retrograde, its pressure is read as turning inward: a season to review commitments and repair foundations rather than build new ones. Astronomically, it simply means Earth is overtaking Saturn.

Is Saturn retrograde the same as a Saturn return?

No. A Saturn return is when Saturn comes back to the place it held in your birth chart, about every 29½ years — around ages 29, 58 and 87. A Saturn retrograde happens to everyone at once, every year. The two can overlap, and astrologers often say a return that includes a retrograde gives you a second pass at its lessons.

How often does Saturn go retrograde, and how long does it last?

Every year — about every 12½ months — for roughly four and a half months, with a shadow of about three and a half months on either side.

What is the Saturn retrograde shadow period?

The shadow is the stretch of zodiac Saturn covers three times: once before it turns retrograde (the pre-retrograde shadow), once retrograde, and once after it turns direct (the post-retrograde shadow). For Saturn the whole cycle runs close to a year.

Why do different sites show different dates?

Two reasons: time zones, and whether a site counts the shadow period. A station that falls near midnight lands on different calendar days around the world, and sites that include the shadow show a longer window. Our dates are computed from planetary ephemerides to the minute and shown in your own time zone.
