Imbolc is a festival celebrated on February 1-2, at the point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is a subtle, almost imperceptible threshold of the year. Imbolc is not about spring as action - it is about the anticipation of change, the first breath of a new cycle that is only just beginning to awaken.

At this time, we do not rush - we listen. Beneath the surface of the frozen earth, life is already stirring, even though everything above ground still appears still and cold. Our inner processes often look the same: something within us has already shifted, but it is not yet ready to emerge. Imbolc is another festival of fire, yet expressed in its purifying, gentle, and supportive form.

Imbolc as a Festival of Daylight

Imbolc is considered a celebration of growing daylight. After the deep darkness of winter, we begin to notice that the days are slowly becoming longer. That is why one of the central traditions of this festival is lighting candles.

Candles are lit after midday but before sunset, so that light is already present in the home before darkness falls. One large white candle is enough, symbolizing the return of the Sun. As the weather may still be unsuitable for outdoor rituals, most Imbolc ceremonies are traditionally held indoors. A beautiful and warming custom of this day is placing candles on windowsills, as if inviting the light to return into the home - and into life itself.

The primary color of Imbolc is white and all its shades: cream, beige, ivory, and soft off-white tones. These colors are associated with snow, milk, purity, peace, and quiet.
