You Keep Calling It Empathy

You Keep Calling It Empathy

But Your Soul Calls It Self-Betrayal

There’s a fine line between compassion and self-destruction—and some of y’all pole-vault over it daily in the name of being “a good person.”

Let’s get one thing straight:

Empathy isn’t supposed to be a full-time soul eviction.

If your boundaries are always bleeding, if your nervous system is fried from holding space for every walking dumpster fire with a sob story and zero accountability... that’s not empathy. That’s energetic martyrdom dressed in spiritual drag.

You weren’t born to be a sponge for everyone else’s suffering.

You’re not the community emotional landfill.

And your capacity to care does not require self-erasure.

Somewhere along the line, you started equating your worth with how much pain you could carry for other people.

Maybe it was childhood.

Maybe it was religion.

Maybe it was your own trauma masquerading as sainthood.

But here’s the sacred truth bomb your soul’s been screaming beneath all that “I’m fine” armor:

This isn’t noble. It’s neglect.

Empathy without boundaries is just codependency with better PR.

So here’s your permission slip (and soul challenge):

You’re allowed to love people and still say no.

You’re allowed to witness pain without absorbing it.

You’re allowed to stop explaining your limits like they’re up for debate.

Because when you call it empathy, but your soul feels drained, violated, and invisible?

That’s not alignment.

That’s self-betrayal wearing a smile.

Let that version of you die.

Let the one who always says yes dissolve like salt in holy water.

And let the new one rise—

the one who loves fiercely,

protects her peace religiously,

and knows that her frequency is not a free-for-all.

Whisper this to yourself today:

“I can hold compassion without holding the weight. My energy is sacred, not up for grabs

Wow! I was literally just thinking this, and all week I’ve been realizing how much emotion I’ve been carrying that’s weighing me down. So well written. A hard pill to swallow but much needed.

Elaine, you are reaching me every time. I am an emotional wreck, sometimes. I can feel it coming, crawling up the back of my neck and head. Don’t know why except possibly some genetic issue. I am already talking myself out of it. Where can I find your other work? This is too hard to figure out how to print. Also, sadly I do not know how to send PayPal info. That is the only choice they give as payment option and I have it but don’t use it. I’ll keep working on it. Thank you again and I look forward to the next gem.
