Everyone tells this story as a kidnapping. A girl picking flowers, the ground splitting open, agod of the dead pulling her down into a marriage she never agreed to, while her mother's grief freezes the whole living world. Then the rescue, the return, and Spring coming back like an apology. That version is true. It is also not the part that does the work, because at some point down there, in the dark she did not choose, Persephone ate the pomegranate.
