Eris: The Goddess Nobody Invited

There’s a story about Eris that gets told as if she’s the villain.

You’ve probably heard it, even if you don’t know you have. There’s a wedding. All the gods of Olympus are invited. Music, divine guests in their best regalia, every figure of significance present. But one goddess is left off the list, because she makes the bride uncomfortable. Because she’s difficult. Because she’s the kind of presence that doesn’t smooth things over.

She shows up anyway.

Not at the door. Not with a complaint. She rolls a single gold apple into the middle of the celebration, inscribed with three words: for the fairest. And then she walks away.

The apple sits there, gleaming, while three of the most powerful figures in the room reach for it at once. Hera. Athena. Aphrodite. None of them willing to be the one who isn’t chosen. A mortal prince gets dragged in to decide between them. He picks Aphrodite, because she promises him the most beautiful person in the world.

That person turns out to be married to someone else.

Ten years of war later, an entire civilization is in ash, and the goddess who threw the apple hasn’t been heard from again. She didn’t need to be. She’d already left the room.

The myth gets told as if Eris caused this. As if the chaos started when she arrived.

But Eris didn’t arrive. Eris was excluded. The chaos started when someone decided she wasn’t worth a seat.
