The Shadow of the Unanswered Call

I want to tell you about the call I spent thirty years refusing to answer.

Not a literal call. No phone, no voice, no angel with a trumpet descending from the clouds. Just a quiet, persistent summons that lived in my chest like a second heartbeat. A sense that there was something I was meant to become, meant to do, meant to be—and that I was perpetually, willfully, exhaustingly not becoming it.

I called it ambition. I called it restlessness. I called it the imposter syndrome I needed to medicate with more achievement, more validation, more external proof of worthiness.

I didn't call it what it was.

It was my own soul, knocking.

And I kept the door locked, barricaded with all the reasons I wasn't ready, wasn't qualified, wasn't worthy of the life I could feel waiting for me on the other side.
