Choosing your first tarot deck (or your next one) is a deeply personal experience. A tarot deck isn’t just a tool you pull off the shelf when you need answers, it becomes something you build a relationship with over time. The right deck will invite you in, spark your curiosity, and encourage you to keep coming back to the cards again and again.
With so many decks available today, it can feel overwhelming. Traditional decks, modern reimaginings, themed decks, minimalist decks, colourful decks, dark decks – the options are endless. The good news? There is no “perfect” deck, only the one that feels right for you.

Watch a Walkthrough Before You Buy
One of the best things you can do before choosing a deck is to watch a walkthrough of it. Most decks now have full flip-throughs available online. Simply typing the name of the deck followed by “walkthrough” or “flip through” into YouTube or other apps will usually bring up several videos.
A walkthrough allows you to see all of the cards, not just the highlights. Publishers often showcase the Major Arcana because they are visually striking and familiar, but the Minor Arcana is where you will spend most of your time reading. Seeing the full deck helps you understand whether the artwork, symbolism, and overall energy of the cards actually resonate with you.
