Angels in Tarot

In the Rider–Waite Tarot deck, angels do not appear by chance. They are not outside forces that come to solve everything for us or save us in difficult moments. In Tarot symbolism, angels reflect our higher potential, inner voice, and spiritual wisdom that we can turn to during important moments in life.

The angelic images are most clearly expressed in three Major Arcana cards: The Lovers, Temperance, and Judgement. Together, they create a special cycle of spiritual growth: choice, harmony, and rebirth.

The Lovers: Raphael and the Moment of Choice

The Lovers card is often seen only as a card of love, but in reality, it is much deeper. It is a card of choice, inner honesty, and the moment when a person stands at a crossroads.

Above the man and woman hovers the Archangel Raphael in purple robes. The purple color symbolizes wisdom, spiritual vision, and connection to higher powers. Raphael does not dictate which decision is right. His role is something else entirely - to help a person hear themselves.

The man and woman on the card are naked for a reason. Their nudity speaks of complete openness, honesty, and vulnerability before their own soul. In moments of important choice, it is impossible to hide behind social roles, other people’s expectations, or masks. Everything comes down to one question: what does your heart truly want?

Raphael seems to ask: “What does your soul say when the noise around you becomes quiet?” Sometimes, to find the right path, you do not need more logical arguments - you simply need silence.

A simple practice for working with the energy of this card: if you are facing an important decision, try spending a few minutes alone with yourself. Write down two possible choices and next to each one, write how you feel about it. Often, the body and intuition know the answer before the mind does.

Temperance: Michael and the Alchemy of Harmony

If Raphael helps us make a choice, then Archangel Michael in the Temperance card teaches us how to maintain balance after that choice.

On the card, an angel with golden wings pours water between two cups - one gold and one silver. This symbolizes the union of opposites: masculine and feminine, logic and intuition, action and rest, the conscious and subconscious mind.

On the angel’s chest is a triangle inside a square - a symbol of spirit living within the material world. It is a reminder that spirituality does not exist separately from everyday life. It appears in the way we work, rest, communicate, and treat ourselves.

Temperance speaks about healing through softness. When life feels full of extremes, rush, or chaos, this card reminds us that we do not have to break ourselves in order to change. Sometimes, it is enough to slowly restore inner balance.

The road leading toward the Sun in the background symbolizes the path to enlightenment. But this path is not about sudden leaps. It is about patience, harmony, and learning not to fall into extremes.

The practical question of this card is: “Where in my life is there too much tension, and where is there not enough energy?” The answer may show you what truly needs your attention.

Judgement: Gabriel and the Awakening of the Soul

The Judgement card often sounds frightening because of its name, but it is not about punishment at all. It is a card of great awakening, the completion of an old chapter, and the transition into a new stage of life.

At the center of the card stands Archangel Gabriel with a golden trumpet. He does not condemn or punish. His trumpet is a call that can no longer be ignored. It is the moment when the old version of yourself no longer works, and your soul is asking for change.

At the bottom of the card, a man, woman, and child rise toward this call. They symbolize the past, present, and future coming together as one. The red cross on the white flag represents the victory of spirit over fear, doubt, and old illusions.

Gabriel asks an important question: “What part of your old self are you ready to finally let go of?” Sometimes, a new life begins not when we gain something, but when we finally allow ourselves to release what no longer has power over us.

Why These Three Angels Matter So Much

Together, these three archangels create a powerful spiritual cycle. First, we hear the inner call for change. Then, we make a choice. After that, we learn how to live in harmony with the new version of ourselves.

Raphael blesses the choice. Michael helps restore balance. Gabriel awakens us to a new life.
