Why Am I So Bored Lately?

You're not bored. You're addicted.

Lately, I’ve been feeling it. That dull hum beneath the surface. The kind subtly ringing through the scrolls, the silences, the scattered half-thoughts. I’ve been bored. “I-have-nothing-to-do” bored. Restless. Possessed by nothingness.

I was lying there, doomscrolling again, while my brain invented stories, obsessions, futures that never existed. I vaguely wanted to crochet but somehow even that felt flat. I thought about doing prepping for an upcoming talk, something I know I’m excited about, but I couldn’t bring myself to open the slides. Instead, I found myself reaching for distractions. Again. And again.

Even writing, which is supposed to be the one place I feel most myself, was just… scattered. I have so many half-thoughts sitting in my drafts, none of them going anywhere. No thread. No spark.

So I’ve come to a soft theory: Boredom is a symptom.

But a symptom of what, exactly?

It might be a symptom of disconnection.

It might be a symptom of excess.

So what now?

I've been feeling it for a good few weeks! Had to properly sit with my boredom to understand where it was coming from!

Agree. Sounds harsh, but Boredom is lazy, it’s a lack of curiosity.

Those are some reasons, but to me it can also be a form of escape 🫣

Thank you for writing and sharing. I know that boredom can be healthy, is a naturally occurring state of being and not always a negative state. Sometimes it is through wandering the halls of boredom that we discover and rediscover the doors and paths that lead to reflection, creativity and imagination. Children (and most adults) these days rarely allow themselves to experience boredom as they hop from one screen to another, one dopamine rush to the next, multi tasking and always needing to do and do and do more ~ we are after all human BEings, so it is ok to just BE 🙏

So true! I've learned to not be afraid of boredom. The incessant chasing of dopamine is just deflection from something deeper, especially when you look at quotes like "You're not bored, you're just used to chaos." It is okay to just BE ❤️
