What You Do With the Gift of Life

wise words from my childhood
I’m sitting here on February 27th, Pokémon Day - the 30th anniversary, in fact! - reflecting on how this franchise has stood the tests of time.
I was 2 years old when the Poké-phenomena started in Japan, and probably about 3 or 4 when it arrived in North America. I can’t begin to describe the pride I felt as an Auntie when, more than 20 years later, my oldest nephew began to show interest!
I know this may seem to be a strange topic of conversation for a spiritual community … but believe me when I tell you: one of the most profoundly wise and divine quotes I’ve ever encountered - one I would wholeheartedly get tattooed on my body - came from the very first (English dubbed) Pokémon movie.
Over 20 years, these words have lingered for a generation of fans. I was far too young when I first watched - too young to fully grasp the message above. As I’ve gotten older though, and with each rewatch, the words resonate more and more.
No matter our background, we all have the power to make positive contributions to society. Whether it’s donating time or money, whether it’s using our knowledge and skills for good instead of evil … or even just smiling at a total stranger!
Are we caring for ourselves? Are we caring for our family and friends? Our community? Our country? Our beautiful planet, Earth?
Are we enjoying our lives … or are we miserable with our careers, our marriages, our stagnant routines, our myriad of issues? Do we wake up with excitement for the day … or are we counting the hours until we can return to bed?
“What am I doing with this gift of life … and what does it say about who I am?” These are the questions I try to ask myself often - to keep myself honest and aligned. Perhaps you ask yourself the same, or similar but in your own words. If you don’t, that’s okay - do it now! There’s never a wrong time to reflect.
Honour this gift of life.
