What Is a Witch and What Is a 21st Century Witch

To begin understanding what a witch or sorceress was and is, you'll need to clear your mind of certain horrible images that have surely been etched into it: an old woman with a hooked nose stirring a cauldron, a wrinkled woman riding a broomstick on a dark night, a crone with an evil gaze and warts dropping a toad into a pot... Yes: culture in all its forms (from Christianity to cartoons, including traditional children's tales) has been responsible for giving us a terrible reputation and an even worse appearance.

But it's time to change that. It's time to start understanding what a witch or sorceress truly is. She's a woman capable of moving energies for or against something, of mastering the vibrations of the universe to achieve a specific goal. She's a person who can travel and interact—and in fact does—comfortably between the earthly plane and the celestial realm, becoming a sort of "human bridge" between both energetic strata.

She's someone aware that good and evil are manifestations of the same cosmic energy and has in her hands the power to tip the balance toward one side or the other.

Also, of course, and perhaps above all, she's a woman with profound knowledge about the powers contained in the elements of nature such as flowers, roots, stones, oils, leaves, water, etc. Witches were the folk healers of the Middle Ages and, because people feared their power, they were condemned to the stake.

Today, we proudly bear our secret title. We know that being witches is an honor and that we carry the banner of feminine power, because within us dwells the indomitable spirit of ancestral and natural rhythms and wisdom.

Because we embrace all the good things our modern era has to offer as we fulfill and share the gifts and powers we've inherited. And because, in general, we tend to be inhabitants of large cities that have all the technical advances of this era we're living in.

We're modern.
