Training the Soul is Also Training
Article · 3 min read ·

The Invisible Discipline
The body easily understands the language of training. We run, lift weights, repeat gestures, and see muscles transform, endurance increase, breath lengthen. But the soul, invisible and subtle, also responds to exercises. It also shapes itself when we repeat practices, when we create rituals, when we stand before the Sacred with constancy.
Training the soul is not an empty metaphor, but a concrete reality. It is a discipline that, even without applause, silently alters the inner architecture. It is in the silence of repetition that serenity is sculpted, it is in the constancy of small practices that a soul capable of crossing abysses is forged.
The Spiritual Meaning of Training
Training the soul means recognizing that spirituality is not only ecstasy but also patience. It is not just sudden illumination but slow discipline.
—> The oratory: an internal or external space where we place ourselves before the Mystery. It exists not only to ask but to cultivate presence.
—> Repetition: far from mechanical, it is alchemical. Repeating a prayer, a mantra, or a meditative practice is like hammering the same point until a passage for the light opens.
—> Discipline: it does not serve to imprison but to liberate. Those who exercise spiritually learn to master their impulses, find clarity amid chaos, and discover that true freedom is born from constancy.
Just as a trained body endures effort, a trained soul endures life. — Felipe Gehennam 🥀
Esotericism
Occult traditions have always spoken of training the soul as a slow and artisanal work.
¥ In Kabbalah, the path of the Tree of Life is a journey of constant polishing. Each sefirah only reveals itself as the soul is willing to work on the previous one. It is progressive training, never instantaneous.
¥ In Alchemy, the repetition of slow fire is what transforms base metal into gold. The soul, likewise, needs the continuous fire of discipline to refine its passions into virtues.
¥ In Hermeticism, “that which is above is like that which is below.” The training of the body reflects the training of the soul. Just as muscles grow with repeated effort, spiritual perception matures with constant practice.
Training the soul is a philosophical act: it means assuming that life is not chance but work. And every work demands a patient artisan.
Exercises for the Spirit
Here I invite you. It is not enough to contemplate the concept; it must be practiced. Some simple ways to train the soul:
🔥 The discipline of prayer or meditation: do not wait for inspiration, create the habit. Five minutes daily, always at the same time, transforms more than scattered hours.
🔥 Writing for yourself: a spiritual journal is training in awareness. By recording internal movements, you learn to see the invisible.
🔥 The sacred gesture in daily life: preparing food in silence, walking attentively, listening to someone without hurry. Each act repeated with intention becomes spiritual training.
🔥 Fasting from the superfluous: choosing to give up something that disperses energy (social media, excesses, complaints) to strengthen the soul in focus.
🔥 Persisting in the simple: even when nothing seems to happen, continue. Spiritual training does not show immediate results but creates invisible roots.
Training the soul is learning to see beauty in constancy. The spectacle may fascinate for a moment, but only discipline sustains the crossing.
Just as a musician only achieves virtuosity after years of repetitive practice, the soul only finds greatness when it offers itself to the repetition of the Sacred. Training is not imprisonment, it is a path. It is not a weight, it is wings.
And you? Are you willing to train your soul with the same seriousness with which you would train your body?
