They never tell you this part of alchemy.

The truth I found when I dug deep

They sell you the lie that it’s about turning lead into gold, as if the soul were a coin press and not a furnace. As if the point were wealth instead of survival. As if the old masters weren’t writing in metaphor because the truth was dangerous.

Alchemy was never about metals.

It was about what happens to a soul when it is left too long in the wrong elements.

I learned this the hard way like most things worth learning, by nearly dissolving myself.

See, a soul is not static. It’s reactive. Put it in damp air long enough and it rusts. Surround it with noise and it fractures. Leave it in darkness and it grows moldy ideas that whisper lies at night. Feed it junk conversations with no depth, rooms with no light, people who siphon instead of share and it begins to transmute itself into something unrecognizable.

Not evil.

Just depleted.

You don’t wake up one morning a villain. You wake up tired. Dull. Short-tempered. Spiritually undernourished. You start reacting instead of choosing. You confuse survival with living. And slowly, quietly, the fire goes out while the body keeps moving.

That’s failed alchemy.

The ancients understood something we’ve forgotten: the elements shape the soul before the soul ever shapes the world.

Earth.

Water.

Air.

Fire.

Not symbols. Conditions.

Your earth is what you stand on, your routines, your work, the physical spaces you return to every day. A cracked foundation produces a crooked house no matter how positive your thoughts are. You can chant affirmations all you want, but if your environment is chaos, your soul will mirror it.

Your water is what you absorb, conversations, media, emotions that aren’t yours but cling anyway. Drink poisoned water long enough and you stop remembering what clarity feels like. You call anxiety “normal.” You call numbness “peace.”

Your air is what you breathe mentally, ideas, beliefs, the stories you tell yourself about who you are and what’s possible. Stale air suffocates slowly. You don’t notice until you try to think deeply and your mind panics like it’s underwater.

And fire…..fire is will. Passion. Purpose. The thing that burns without asking permission. Fire is dangerous, so modern life smothers it early. Too intense. Too loud. Too much. So you learn to keep it small and polite until it barely warms you anymore.

You didn’t lose yourself.

You were chemically altered by your surroundings.

And just like any alchemical process, the solution isn’t guilt, it’s adjustment.

Change the elements.

Move the furniture. Open the windows. Burn the old scripts. Introduce silence where noise once lived. Introduce light where shame nested. Introduce heat where apathy took root.

This is why changing your environment feels terrifying to people who are spiritually asleep. They think comfort is safety. They think familiarity is loyalty. They don’t realize they’re defending the very conditions that are dissolving them.

But once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

You realize that walking away isn’t weakness…. it’s recalibration.

That protecting your peace isn’t selfish….it’s chemical necessity.

That sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is rearrange your life until your soul can breathe again.

Alchemy always requires heat. Always requires separation. Always requires loss.

First you break down.

Then you burn off what doesn’t belong.

Then…only then…you recombine.

Not into who you were.

Into something stronger.

More refined.

Less reactive.

More intentional.

Gold was never the goal.

A soul that can withstand the elements without losing its fire was.

And once you understand that

You stop asking why you feel off…

and start asking what needs to change around you before you change yourself.
