The World That Answers Back

The World That Answers Back

You are a divine fractal, not a flawed human that needs fixing.

I used to think the mirror concept was a metaphor for correction, that the world shows me my flaws so I might see them clearly enough to fix them, as though existence were a kind of moral optometry appointment I kept forgetting to attend. However, Steiner was after something stranger than that, and once I sat with it long enough the whole architecture of the thing rearranged itself in my understanding.

For Steiner, the world does not simply sit there waiting to be perceived, complete and finished, indifferent to the instrument doing the perceiving. What I see of the world is co-authored by the state of my own inner organs of cognition, by the clarity or murk of my thinking, my feeling, my willing, so that the mirror is never neutral glass but living tissue, responsive to the one who approaches it. This is why the schooling he describes in Knowledge of the Higher Worlds is not a set of techniques for acquiring supernatural facts about a hidden world elsewhere, but a purification of the very organ that does the looking, so that as the organ clarifies, the mirror clarifies with it, and what was once fog resolves into structure that was, I have come to believe, always there and simply could not be received by an instrument not yet capable of holding it.

Here is where the strangeness deepens because if my inner state governs what the mirror shows me, then the distortion I keep locating out there in the world, in the people who wrong me, in the circumstances that seem to conspire, was never a fact about the world at all, but a fact about the instrument, and this is either the most humbling realization available to a human being or the most liberating one, and I suspect it is both at once, arriving in that order.

Blavatsky gives me the reason any of this is even possible, why the mirror can show me anything true rather than mere private hallucination, and it comes down to the old Hermetic axiom she carried forward into Theosophy with such conviction, that what is above corresponds structurally to what is below, that the macrocosm is not merely reflected in the microcosm as a poetic flourish but is genuinely repeated there, pattern folding into pattern at every scale, so that the human constitution is built along the same lines as the cosmos that contains it. This is not developmental in the way Steiner’s schooling is developmental. It is simply true, a structural fact of the way reality is put together, and it is the reason the mirror is not arbitrary. I am not projecting nonsense onto a blank screen when I look at the world and see myself reflected there. I am reading a correspondence that was built into the architecture before I arrived to notice it.

So the two of them together give me something neither offers alone. Blavatsky tells me why the correspondence exists, that above and below were shaped from the same pattern and cannot help but rhyme. Steiner tells me why I so often fail to read it accurately, why the same world shows radically different faces to different observers, and why the work of clarifying perception is not incidental to spiritual development but is the whole of it, since the goal was never to escape the mirror for some unmediated contact with a world beyond reflection. There is no beyond. The mirror goes all the way down. What changes is not what is being shown, but the fineness of the instrument doing the receiving, and the more I polish it, moral effort braided with cognitive effort braided with a kind of patient willing that Steiner insists cannot be rushed, the more the world stops looking like something happening to me and starts looking like something answering me, in a language I am only slowly learning to read.
