The Things That Keep Me Up at Night
Article · 2 min read ·

Trying to grasp eternity with human hands
I think about contradictions a lot.
Maybe too much.
That’s probably why I’m still awake when the world goes quiet, staring at the ceiling like it’s hiding answers it promised to tell me once I got my life together.
We’re walking paradoxes, us humans.
We pray to something we can’t see and still lose our minds when we misplace our phone for five minutes.
We crave freedom but invent alarms and deadlines to cage ourselves with.
We speak about eternal love but check our reflection every thirty seconds to see if we still look worthy of it.
Some nights, I wonder if the soul laughs at us, this eternal, ancient energy stuck inside a body that bruises when it walks into the coffee table.
Because deep down, we know we’re more than flesh and bone.
You can feel it in those strange moments, the déjà vu that tastes like another lifetime, the dream that knows too much, the whisper of someone who shouldn’t still be here but is.
Science tells me ghosts aren’t real, just echoes and neurons firing wrong.
But try explaining that to the way your skin prickles when a room suddenly feels occupied.
Try telling your gut that the chill that brushes your neck at 3 AM was just bad insulation.
It’s funny we’re told not to believe in what we can’t prove, but we still believe in love, in memory, in hope.
You can’t weigh those either, yet they shape entire lives.
My mom says the afterlife is like stepping through a door we’ve already opened a thousand times in dreams…..familiar, but different.
I’ve asked God about it too, but He tends to answer in riddles, like, “Why does fire remember light?”
The ancestors just smile like they’ve been through it and know how little sense any of this makes from this side of the veil.
And maybe that’s the real torment and the beauty of being human:
We’re half ghost already.
Every night we die a little when we sleep and wake up resurrected, pretending it’s normal.
Every memory is a haunting. Every heartbeat is a seance between the body and the soul.
We try to build lives out of certainty, but existence was never meant to be tidy.
We are contradictions made conscious, divine energy renting human suits, pretending we understand the lease.
We ache for meaning, even when we know the meaning might be that there isn’t one, or that it changes every time we look at it.
So yeah, these are the things that keep me up at night.
Not fear….wonder.
The kind that hums in your ribs when you realize the universe might be listening back.
The kind that makes you both terrified and grateful to still be here, suspended between what we know and what we’ll never know.
When the silence finally settles, I take a breath and remember….
maybe the point isn’t to find the answers.
Maybe it’s to love the mystery so fiercely that it becomes home.
