THE GOLDEN THRESHOLD
When summer surrenders its light to autumn
Article ยท 3 min read ยท ยท

There are seasonal changes that you simply feel in the air. The shift from summer to autumn, however, seems to touch something deeper. On September 22nd, when nature begins to tilt toward the darkness of earlier evenings, a door symbolically opens: we leave behind summer's expansive energy and enter a territory of introspection, transformation, and retreat.
The landscape changes, and so does our inner landscape.
During summer, we live outward: more movement, more encounters, more hours of light, more desire to experience. Autumn shifts that frequency. Energy begins to descend toward the roots, as if the Earth herself whispers to us that the time has come to return to ourselves.
THE BODY ALSO SENSES THE PORTAL
Our body responds to the gradual decrease in light and drop in temperatures. Sleep patterns may change, appetite may increase, we may seek warmer, more comforting foods and feel a greater need for rest and retreat.
Natural light also plays a role in regulating our circadian rhythms, which is why maintaining some exposure to daylight, respecting sleep schedules, and keeping a movement routine can help us navigate this transition more smoothly.
But there's another reading.
From an energetic perspective, the body seems to gradually abandon summer's expansive vibration to enter a more receptive frequency. It's the time to listen to signals that during the luminous months may have remained hidden beneath the noise of activity.
THE MAGIC OF WHAT ENDS
Autumn holds a teaching that few seasons offer with such clarity: nothing truly disappears; everything transforms.
A leaf falls, but returns to the earth. A seed remains hidden, but continues to hold life. The tree appears bare, though inside it's already preparing the next cycle.
That's why this season can be a powerful moment to ask ourselves:
What part of me is ready to die symbolically?
What story do I no longer need to keep telling?
What do I want to store in my roots to grow later?
It's not about abandoning who we are, but about shedding the layers that no longer represent our essence.
A SMALL RITUAL TO WELCOME AUTUMN
At dusk, place a candle next to a dried leaf, preferably one gathered from the ground during a walk.
Sit for a few minutes in silence.
Watch the flame and think about what you wish to close. Then, take the leaf in your hands and mentally formulate a simple phrase:
"I give thanks for what I've lived. I release what has ended. I open space for what is yet to be born."
You can keep the leaf for a few weeks as a symbol of transformation and, when you feel the cycle is complete, return it to nature.
TIPS FOR NAVIGATING THE ENERGY SHIFT
โ Seek a few minutes of natural light each day.
โ Reestablish regular sleep and rest schedules.
โ Incorporate seasonal foods and warm preparations.
โ Tidy and cleanse those corners of your home that feel heavy.
โ Reduce excess noise, screens, and stimuli when you can.
โ Write down what you want to close before beginning a new cycle.
โ Walk through a forest or natural space and consciously observe how the landscape changes.
THE HIDDEN MESSAGE OF AUTUMN
Perhaps that's why autumn isn't a sad season, but an initiatory one.
It reminds us that we too have cycles. That we don't always have to bloom. That there are moments to grow outward and others to grow inward.
When the first leaves begin to fall, nature isn't losing its beauty.
It's revealing its mystery.
And perhaps that's the true message of the seasonal change: some things must fall so we can discover what remains when everything superficial disappears.
Summer taught us to shine.
Autumn arrives to teach us to find our own light in the darkness.
