Persephone: the queen of the shadows

When summer begins to fade and nature slowly abandons its splendor, there exists an ancient story that seems to awaken beneath our feet. This is the story of Persephone, daughter of Demeter and one of the most mysterious figures in Greek mythology.

Persephone represents that moment when life changes seasons, when the leaves fall and the earth falls silent. Her myth speaks of an abduction, of a descent into the underworld, and of a transformation that will ultimately turn her into a queen.

Legend has it that Persephone was carried to the underground realm by Hades, god of the underworld. Demeter, distraught over her daughter's disappearance, stopped nourishing the earth with her fertility. The fields withered, the harvests vanished, and the world began to know hunger.

Finally, the gods intervened and an agreement was reached: Persephone could return to her mother for part of the year, but had to remain in the underworld for the rest. The reason was tied to the pomegranate seeds she had eaten there.

And so the cycle of the seasons was born, symbolically.

When Persephone returns, the earth awakens: spring arrives, the fields bloom, and life flourishes once more. When she descends again to join Hades, Demeter feels her absence and nature withdraws. Autumn and winter arrive.

But there is a much deeper interpretation of this myth.

Persephone does not remain forever as the young maiden who was abducted. She descends as a maiden and returns transformed into a queen. The underworld becomes an initiation. There she comes to know what exists beneath the surface, what cannot be seen in the full light of day: fears, secrets, death, desire, and transformation.

That is why Persephone also belongs to the realm of those who undergo great changes. Her story reminds us that some stages of our existence feel like winter, but do not necessarily mean an end.

There are seeds that need darkness before they become flowers.

Autumn invites us to let go of that which has already completed its cycle. Winter teaches us to remain silent while something new is preparing within us. Persephone represents precisely that mystery: the capacity to descend without losing ourselves and return as someone different.

Perhaps that is why her crown as queen of the underworld is much more than a symbol of power.

It is the crown of one who learned to walk among shadows and discovered that even down there, there exists a secret form of light.
