Learning the Language of Signs and a Living Oracle
Having been raised as a pastor's daughter in the Christian faith, I am by no means a stranger to bible stories about divine intervention. Listening to my father's weekly sermons and sitting through countless Sunday school lessons filled my head with narratives of the divine guiding and speaking to mortals through events occurring in the world around them. A great flood, a bird messenger, a rainbow promise, a burning bush, torturous plagues, a Christmas star and many more disastrous and miraculous accounts of signs from The Almighty Above.
🪐You are something the whole universe is doing; in the same way a wave is something the whole ocean is doing 🌊 ...Alan Watts
The world around me is unlike a screen upon which I watch, waiting passively for divine messages to always be delivered in an awesome, immense, mind-blowing fashion. I play a much larger part! I have learned I am always able to actively connect to the magic, messages and meaning through a sacred, evolving and sometimes subtle language of signs, symbols and synchronicities.
💠 SACRED:
Divine intervention (the belief that a deity can cause or influence events in the world and /or intervene in the affairs of mortals to guide, protect, punish, etc.) is a concept likely as old as humanity itself and is a core principle in many religions worldwide. Need I say more?
🌀 EVOLVING:
The language of the signs is ever evolving and also very personalized once you learn to listen and receive. The communication (messages, guidance, meaning) received through reading signs is fluid and open to interpretation not unlike looking at a work of art elicits a very personal response.
Many early oracle systems involve interpretation of signs and symbols which were decided upon long ago; a time when humans were more in tuned to the natural world. While many natural elements have long been known to convey meaning, there is meaning and messages to be discovered in other more common, modern objects and activities / events as well.
In a living oracle, unlike other divination systems, which use cards, coins, runes etc., I invoke and interpret signs by casting myself into the environment where I carefully observe and detect even the subtlest of signs.
🪬 SYMBOLS:
objects, colors, numbers, letters, words, animals, places, even sounds, smells; anything really can be symbolic within the ever evolving and very personalized language of signs.
💞 SYNCHRONICITIES:
Experiencing an unlikely coincidence, an event of great significance, occurrence of patterns, repetition of symbols, or bewildering timing /sequence of events.
🙌🏽 How to cast a personalized oracle system: There are several variations to how you may choose to cast a personalized oracle system or Living Oracle aka L.O.
1) Guiding question or open ended: Similar to Tarot or oracle cards, you can ask a guiding question before casting a L.O. or not. You skip the question and just see what signs appear and interpret them as the apply to you.
2) On the move or stationary: When you cast yourself into the L.O. you can remain in one place and observe signs that appear to you there. Another option when casting is to do so while moving on foot or otherwise and interpret the signs you find along the way.
3) Single or multiple signs: You can choose to receive and interpret a single sign or several at a time, similar to choosing one card or multiple in a Tarot or oracle card reading.
4) Time bound or not — or just 💥 BOOM!
You also have the option of determining the amount of time to cast a L.O. For example, you may choose to cast yourself for a determined period of time or distance, if moving. Sometimes for me it’s during morning coffee in my yard or while on my evening walk.
It is possible you may not even be considering casting and signs at all and a sign will just appear. These are often my favorite kind of signs! The kind that explode like unexpected fireworks in a silent black sky.
🔮 Purposes of signs we receive:
- healing / signs of comfort
- “I am here”
- guiding / decision making
- signs of change coming
- warnings
- redirection
- signs of abundance or loss
- relationship signs
🔬 How to interpret a sign: Some signs come already loaded with meaning! These are easy! A song with connection to a specific memory, a flash of your favorite color, a smell that transports like a Time Machine, a significant number, an familiar animal spirit friend, a quote from a movie that moved you eons ago! These can seem like no brainers to decipher.
▫️Books! There are so many helpful books; see my little list at the end of the article. 📕 🐛
▫️G.T.S.🧂(Google that sh*t —I mean sign) oh, but don’t forget to sprinkle some salt on it, figuratively speaking since it is the Internet! Everything with a grain of salt, right? Anyways you can google “what is the spiritual / symbolic meaning of ______(fill in the blank)” and find a wealth of information and perspectives on your sign. It’s simple! Find rabbit hole, dive in, and find what resonates with you most.
▫️self- discovery, meditation, and reflection:
Some signs are not so easy to interpret and may require more effort and time (reflection or meditation) to understand. I will share a personal story about grass to help explain.
Last month on a very hot weekday, I found myself completely mesmerized by the way the sunlight was sparkling off of bright, green grass and the way it moved in the breeze. This actually occurred 3 different times and 3 different locations on that otherwise quite ordinary day. I knew it was a sign and sought out its meaning. My books weren’t helping, the internet didn’t either, so I was left to reflect and discover the meaning of this sign for myself.
So after two days of reflecting on this sign and how it made me feel, I realized besides the obvious message of “grounding” there was a deeper meaning. A powerful message of the unity and connectedness of all living things was also speaking to my soul. Similar to a drop of water in the ocean, each blade of grass is only a blade, a singular object, but when all the blades together dance in the sunlit breeze, they are unified and the magnificence lies in the collective. No one blade of grass is more important or impressive than another.
This was the message the grass sign had delivered to me ~ the beauty and power of oneness ❇️
