Familiars, Spirit Animals, and Other Mysterious Creatures

So there I was…sitting on my back porch, sipping a cup of questionable herbal tea Lacey made from her apocalypse-ready garden, when a squirrel locked eyes with me like he had business. Not regular squirrel business either. I’m talkin’ full-on spiritual subpoena. This little dude wasn’t looking for nuts. He was trying to read my soul.

And that’s when it hit me.

Was this my spirit animal?

Had I been chosen… by a furry-tailed meth gremlin?

So naturally, I did what any normal person would do…I spiraled down a three-hour Google rabbit hole of “spirit animals vs. familiars vs. animal totems vs. what the hell is that in the attic.”

Here’s what I found, in case you also need answers but want them delivered like a blue-collar TED Talk:

Spirit Animals: These are your cosmic mascots. Energetic life-coaches that show up when you need to grow, heal, or stop being an idiot. You don’t choose them…they choose you. You could be rolling with a majestic eagle, or a raccoon that steals your leftover Chinese food and your emotional stability. It’s not always glamorous. Spirit animals don’t care about your vibe aesthetic.

Familiars: These are magical companions. Think of them as your spiritual sidekicks, but sassier. Familiars show up in witchcraft lore,especially in Europe during the “Witch Panic” years (which is what I’m now calling 1400–1700 AD, aka humanity’s most paranoid group project). Witches were accused of having animal helpers that were secretly demons or spirits that whispered spells and fetched herbs and did door dash for potions.

Familiars were often cats, birds, toads, or ferrets…aka things that already act like they know more than you. They weren’t just pets, they were magical co-workers who showed up like, “What’s the plan, boss? Want me to hex your ex or bring you your bone broth?”

Also: they might have lived in your pocket.

That’s right. Pocket demons.

We had Pokémon before Pokémon, folks.

Little-Known History, In the ancient world, animals were not just seen as meat with legs…they were sacred messengers. Native American tribes, Celtic clans, Norse warriors…they all saw animal spirits as guides and protectors. You’d dream of a wolf? That wasn’t anxiety, it was a message. You saw a raven at your door? That was either a spiritual awakening… or a sign your Aunt Berta was about to die. Either way, important.

Even old-school witches believed that your familiar could bond to your soul. You didn’t just adopt a magical raccoon, they adopted you. They could shift into spirit form, hang out in dreams, spy on enemies, or just sit smugly on your shoulder judging people at Walmart.

 In fact, a lot of people in the Salem Witch Trials got burned just because their cat looked at someone funny. Imagine dying because Whiskers gave the judge side-eye.

 Flash Forward to Today, spirit animals are all over inspirational Instagram posts, foxes in snow with quotes like “Trust the silence.” But real spiritual animal work? Still very much alive.

 Sometimes it’s subtle. You keep seeing crows and suddenly feel like you need to clean your life out like a haunted junk drawer. Or you start dreaming about bears every time you burn yourself out. That ain’t random, my dude. That’s cosmic feedback. From furballs.

And me?

Well, I think my familiar is Bones.

Not just because he’s loyal and watches me poop without blinking, but because he feels stuff before I do. He’ll growl at nothing in the corner when my energy’s off. He’ll sit next to me when I’m sad and let out the world’s loudest sigh, like he’s exhausted by my emotional immaturity. That’s love. That’s partnership. That’s familiar energy.

 Although… the squirrel’s still watching me.

So who knows. Maybe I’ve got two.
