๐ Emotional Patience
Article ยท 3 min read ยท
There are people who know how to wait for answers, money, opportunities, or love.
What they don't always knowโฆ
is how to wait for themselves.
Because patience with life is one thing.
But patience with your own process is something else entirely.
๐ Not everything resolves when you want it to
We live in an era that taught us speed:
instant messages
quick results
immediate dopamine
visible changes in no time
And without realizing it, we started treating ourselves the same way.
We want to heal fast.
Understand fast.
Move on fast.
Be okay againโฆ fast.
But emotions don't follow calendars.
๐ What is emotional patience?
It's not resignation.
It's not staying still.
It's not enduring what hurts forever.
Emotional patience is the ability to stay with yourself while something ripens inside you.
It's not demanding clarity in the middle of confusion.
It's not hating yourself for still feeling.
It's not abandoning yourself just because you haven't healed yet.
๐ค The problem isn't feeling slowโฆ it's comparing yourself
Often we think we're running late because we see others doing "better".
But you don't know if that calm you see is real.
You don't know what processes are hidden.
From developmental psychology, authors like Carl Rogers argued that each person has their own rhythm of growth and self-actualization.
You're not blooming late.
You bloom when you can.
๐ The moon doesn't change phases in one night either
We love using the moon as a symbol, but we forget something important:
no phase happens all at once.
The moon changes gradually.
Almost in silence.
Without announcing it.
And so do you.
There are internal processes already happening even though they're not visible yet.
๐ What emotional impatience looks like
Sometimes it looks like this:
- getting frustrated for still being sad
- thinking "I should have gotten over this by now"
- looking for distractions to avoid feeling
- making decisions out of desperation
- wanting answers before their time
- abandoning processes that were still growing
You don't always want to move forward.
Sometimes you just want to stop feeling uncomfortable.
โ๐ป How to practice emotional patience
1. Change the question
Instead of:
Ask:
2. Respect your biological rhythms
The body processes emotions on a different timeline than thought.
Sleeping, walking, breathing, resting also help with integration.
3. Don't insult yourself for feeling
You're not weak for taking time.
You're human.
4. Notice small changes
Sometimes you're not the same.
You just haven't noticed it.
๐ฎ Final reflection
Maybe you don't need more pressure.
Maybe you need more tenderness.
Because some things don't get better when you push them.
They get better when you stay with them.
And while you demand to be a different person by tomorrow,
you miss the version of you today who also deserves love.
Emotional patience doesn't speed up the process.
But it keeps you from breaking while fighting it.
Like the moonโฆ
that never hurries,
and yet always changes. ๐โจ
