The Mythological Story

In the ancient Vedic tradition, Chandra (also called Soma), the Moon-God, once married the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati — representing the 27 lunar mansions (Nakshatras).

However, Chandra favoured only one — Rohini — and neglected his other wives. Out of anger, Daksha cursed him: Chandra’s brilliance would fade and he would wax and wane, losing his radiance.

To seek relief from the curse, Chandra worshipped Shiva with devotion.

  • Pleased, Shiva accepted Chandra and placed him on his head (the crescent moon) and granted him the cycle of waxing and waning, thereby restoring his purpose and accepting his nature.

Thus, the lunar phases became a divine reminder: life cycles, light in darkness, surrender and renewal.

When the New Moon appears, Chandra enters the darkest phase — yet the promise of new light is inherent, nurtured by Shiva’s grace.

Smoke Ritual for the New Moon

What you will need:

  • Dried lavender (for calm)
  • Rosemary (for clarity and protection)
  • Bay leaves (for intention)

How to perform:

  1. Light the herbs and allow the smoke to rise.
  2. Move the smoke clockwise around your space to release old energy.
  3. Then move counter-clockwise to draw in calm, renewal and light.
  4. Place your hands over the heart.

Breathe deeply:

  1. Allow the ashes to rest — symbolising the end of one cycle and the seed of the next.

Lunar Meditation

Sit comfortably, close your eyes.

Visualise a soft silver-white light descending from the moon, entering the crown of your head, flowing through your body to your roots.

Inhale: “I surrender into the dark.”

Exhale: “I trust the promise of new light.”

Stay here for 5 minutes, simply breathing and allowing the rhythm of your heart to echo the lunar cycle.

Journaling

  1. What part of my life is in its “waning phase” right now — and how can I trust it is preparing for renewal?
  2. What intention will I plant in this New Moon’s dark soil — knowing it will bloom in time?

Closing Reflection

The myth of Chandra and Shiva teaches us that the darkest phase is not a failure — it is the sacred space for rebirth. As you honour this New Moon, remember: the silence, the cycle, the waiting — all are fertile.

Light your herbs. Connect with the stillness. Plant your intention.

And know: the moon returns. So shall you. 🌙✨🌿💎
