πŸŒ™ The Moon and Emotional Memory

Why certain lunar phases awaken memories

Today is one of those days.

Images from a distant past resurface within me.

I see my hands intertwining with others, small hands from youth. I hear laughter I haven't heard in years. Voices that illuminate that spark within me that I sometimes feel the need to rekindle.

But why are there more nostalgic periods? Times when a memory tucked away and sealed suddenly resurfaces? Is it just coincidence?

In my research, I discovered that the Moon, among its immense powers, has the ability to meddle and play tricks even with our memories and recollection.

The Moon is the astrological symbol of emotional memory, the unconscious body, and the impressions we've recorded without realizing it. In psychology, the Moon corresponds to the structures that govern emotional regulation, implicit memory, and somatic processes.

When the Moon changes phase, sign, or form in the sky, the way our nervous system "illuminates" what has remained in shadow also changes.

πŸŒ™ The Moon as the Body's Emotional Archive

The Moon represents what we experienced before we could explain it:

  • bodily sensations
  • nonverbal memories
  • held emotions
  • family imprinting
  • somatic memories from childhood

In psychology, this corresponds to implicit memoryβ€”the kind we don't remember with our mind but that the body continues to reproduce.

When the Moon moves, these layers activate.

Have you ever been walking down the street and caught a scent that reignites something within you that you couldn't put into words but feel strongly in your chest? Thank the Moon playing with you.

Why Do Certain Lunar Phases Awaken Memories?

1️⃣ New Moon β€” The Void That Brings Out What's Missing

During the New Moon, the sky is dark.

Psychologically, this state of "absence of light" amplifies:

  • subtle sensations
  • unresolved memories
  • suspended emotions
  • intuitions emerging from the body

It's as if the nervous system enters a mode of deep listening.

Many experience flashbacks, intense dreams, or childhood memories.

The Moon as a Bridge Between Body and Psyche

In somatic psychology, the Moon is the perfect symbol of how:

  • the body remembers
  • the mind interprets
  • emotion connects
  • the past reappears in the present

Lunar phases don't "create" memories: they illuminate them.

And what emerges isn't random: it's what the body is ready to process.

✨ As with all my articles, I'd love for this to create connections, and for today I suggest: The memory that sought you out.

Did you wake up or at some point during the day have a memory pop up? Share it in the comments.
