For any soul that feels the pull of spring and the return of light!

Hello, fellow soul! The Spring Equinox is almost here, and with it comes Ostara, a celebration of balance, renewal, and new beginnings! If you've ever wanted to honor the changing seasons, this guide will show you how.

As winter comes to a close, we find nature itching to spring into action. So we humans should follow suit and prepare to welcome the changing of the seasons with open arms. In this guide, I will share the history, significance, and celebration of Ostara. Whether you are a seasoned spiritual practitioner wanting a simple recap of this lively holiday, or a freshly sprung seed wanting to dip their toes into a seasonal celebration, I'm sure you'll find this guide helpful for your spiritual endeavors.

~Origin and Meaning~

Ostara is a time to dust off our wintery boots and celebrate spring awakening. I don't know about you, but even though I do enjoy winter, I was definitely starting to crave some sort of warmth. Luckily, spring is right around the corner with the marking of Ostara.

For some background, this celebration is part of the Wheel of the Year, a cycle of eight seasonal celebrations observed by pagans, witches, and nature-based spiritual practitioners worldwide. Some Wiccans use the term “sabbat” to refer to each festival. This specific holiday marks the Spring Equinox, typically falling around March 19–21 in the Northern Hemisphere. However, be warned! If you reside in the Southern Hemisphere, this holiday would actually mark your autumn. Essentially, this is the time when day and night hours are roughly in balance with each other, which is why it's considered the beginning of spring for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

Now, a fun fact about the name of the holiday! Many believe it is named after an Anglo-Saxon goddess called Eostre, and some historians think this may even be where the name Easter comes from. She is associated with fertility, new light, and the coming of spring. This goes to show that many traditions tend to borrow ideas from one another, and it's actually something I suggest and practice myself. Taking little bits of wisdom from different beliefs can help you become more whole as a human.

~Now...Why Celebrate?~

The return of spring for our ancestors was a big deal. While many of us today can experience seasonal depression, imagine that tenfold without the comforts of the modern world (especially if you live in a privileged country). That being said, this time of year is when people historically began celebrating the fertility of the land, since it could finally be worked again. Many communities welcomed the season with bonfires, offerings, and planting ceremonies.

We can still see echoes of this in modern life through symbols like eggs, rabbits, and spring flowers. Personally, I've been loving the sun on my skin and the new songs sung by birds. It's a special time where you can really feel the world opening up again.

It's also a reminder that time is cyclical and that all things return to balance. Dark to light. Death to life. Ostara is a time to honor life, new beginnings, and the resurfacing of energy.

My main argument for celebrating Ostara, is that this is the perfect time to review your yearly aspirations! Or even better, create new ones...Personally, I don't set many New Year's resolutions. Instead, I tend to revisit and renew my goals when spring arrives. The energy of spring helps me “spring” into action, and I find myself sticking to my aspirations much better rather than pushing against the tide of a bitter winter! I always recommend living and structuring your life with the seasons. Nature knows best and can help ease you into new phases of your life.

Now, take a moment to ask yourself and maybe journal....

What seeds am I ready to plant in this new season of my life?

~How to Celebrate for YOU!~

Now the fun part! There are many ways to celebrate, as evidenced by the many traditions that observe this seasonal shift. My perspective is from a solo practitioner, so in this section of the guide, I will offer tools and ideas to help you create your own Ostara celebration according to your practice and comfort level. Whether you are a crystal lover, a witch, or simply someone who wants to celebrate new life, there is something here for you.

For My New Seedlings & Curious Souls

Just dipping your toes into seasonal celebrations? No experience needed! Try these simple and beautiful ways to welcome spring:

  • Wear soft spring colors like yellow, orange, lavender, and green.
  • Go outside and simply notice spring arriving: birds, blossoms, fresh air, and warmth.
  • Buy fresh spring flowers and place them in the center of your home to bring in seasonal energy.

- examples: tulips, daffodils, lilies

  • Make a spring-themed charcuterie board to celebrate abundance.

- think cheese, honey, grapes, and citrus

  • If you enjoy baking, try making honey or lavender-flavored bread or sweets!

For Mindfulness

Spring is the perfect time to clear stagnant energy from your home and start new habits that support your mental and physical wellness.

  • Spring clean your physical and energetic space. Donate or discard clutter, and open your windows to invite fresh air and energy inside.
  • Journal about what you learned during winter and how those lessons can support you in the coming season.
  • Greet the new sunrise with a simple 5–15 minute morning meditation.
  • Start a new wellness habit and journal your progress this season.
  • Always celebrate your small wins!

Lunar Lovers

For my fellow lunar lovers! This year's Ostara falls during a waxing crescent moon, which naturally supports the energy of new beginnings. It's the first light after the new moon! The universe is building light from two directions, so set your intentions well and plant your seeds with confidence.

  • Set intentions that focus on planning, beginning action, and building hope around the intentions that were set on the new moon. Tip: Journaling in a lunar journal can help track your progress and intentions.
  • Reflect on your mood and energy during the new moon and what you learned.
  • Burn floral incense to clear stagnant energy.

-Suggestions: jasmine, rose, or lavender.

Crystal Workers

For my crystal workers, this is a wonderful time to cleanse stones that embody growth and prosperity. Here are some crystals that align beautifully with Ostara energy:

  • Green Aventurine – growth & opportunity
  • Moss Agate – earth connection & plant energy
  • Topaz – rebirth, self-development, creativity
  • Moonstone – lunar alignment, meditation support, feminine energy
  • Rose Quartz – heart opening and emotional warmth
  • Citrine – luck, success, prosperity, and motivation
  • Clear Quartz – amplifies intentions and energy

For Witches & Seasoned Practitioners

You know your craft well, so follow your intuitive flow with the energy of spring. Here are some traditional elements often used in Ostara celebrations:

  • Create a seasonal altar with symbols like eggs, rabbits, seeds, and spring flowers
  • Perform a seed blessing ritual for intentions you wish to grow throughout the year
  • Practice fertility or abundance spells
  • Explore making a mini bottle altar using a glass jar, soil, flowers, seeds, and an egg with your intention written on it.

Herbs to Note

For anyone who likes to work with herbs, here are some that carry the energy of spring and work beautifully in teas, foods, offerings, or altar displays!

  • Chamomile
  • Dandelion
  • Lavender
  • Parsley
  • Rosemary

~My Closing Remarks~

However you choose to celebrate, remember that Ostara belongs to anyone who feels the pull of the changing seasons. You don't need a coven, a perfect altar, or a strict tradition. You simply need to show up, open your heart to the returning light, and tend to your garden <3.

Happy Ostara, everyone!

It’s so beautiful seeing Ostara being celebrated 🌱✨ It actually aligns closely with our Persian New Year, Nowruz🪻. (Read Norooz) Nowruz is over 3,000 years old, rooted in ancient Persian traditions and the arrival of spring. Just like Ostara, it’s all about renewal, rebirth, light overcoming darkness, and new beginnings. We celebrate it at the exact moment of the spring equinox, when day and night are equal. 🌞♈️ (this year it’s on March 20 at 2:45:59 GMT) It also has roots in ancient Persian beliefs like Zoroastrianism, which emphasised the balance between light and darkness and living in harmony with nature—something you can really feel in both Nowruz🪻 and Ostara 🌿 One of our most special traditions is setting up the “Haft-Seen” (or sometimes Haft-Sheen) table. It includes seven symbolic items, each representing something meaningful; like growth, health, love, patience, and prosperity. It’s a beautiful way of bringing intention into the new year…🪻✨🦋 There are so many shared symbols too, growth, nature, fresh starts🌱🪻🌞 This year, Nowruz feels especially meaningful for us. It carries a deeper sense of hope, because we feel closer than ever to the freedom for Iran (from a radical brutal regime) It hasn’t been an easy path, and a lot has been sacrificed to get here…🕊️🪽 but that’s exactly why this new beginning feels so powerful.🪽✌🏼 Wishing everyone a season of renewal and brighter days ahead ✨🪻🩵🌞🌱

Thank you so much for this beautiful and moving comment 🪻 The connection between Nowruz and Ostara is so powerful! Both are rooted in the same universal hope for light, renewal and new beginnings. The Haft-Seen table sounds absolutely sacred 🌿 May this season bring more peace, hope and brighter days to you and your loved ones🕊️ Happy Nowruz and Happy Ostara! 🌸🌱
