New moon in Cancer🦀

A hug for the soul
Before talking about this New Moon, I like to imagine a scene. It's the height of summer, and outside, the world seems to be asking me to seize every minute—travel, plans, terraces, long days, packed schedules… And yet, the sky does just the opposite. While everything invites us outward, the Moon disappears, dims for a few hours, and reminds us that even in the brightest season, there's a moment to turn inward.
On July 14, 2026, the Moon and Sun will meet in the sign of Cancer, beginning a new lunar cycle. Astronomically, it's the moment when the Moon positions itself between Earth and the Sun, so from here we can barely see it. For thousands of years, this phase has marked the beginning of a new lunar month and served as a reference point for calendars, harvests, and celebrations in countless cultures. In astrology, however, it's interpreted as the symbolic moment to plant an intention, to sow something not yet visible but that can grow as the days pass.
And it couldn't happen in a more appropriate sign for speaking of what is born slowly.
Cancer is often known as the sign of emotions, but perhaps that definition falls short. In reality, Cancer speaks of home—not just the house where we sleep each night, but that place (sometimes physical, sometimes invisible) where we feel we can let our guard down. We all need one—a space where we don't have to prove anything, where we can truly rest, where the body stops being on alert and the heart remembers what it feels like to be safe.
Perhaps that's why this sign has always been connected to roots. With family, yes, but also with the history we carry inside. Because we all come from somewhere, we've all learned to love in a particular way, to protect ourselves in a specific manner, to express or hide our emotions according to the environment we grew up in. Often we walk through life believing our reactions are simply "who we are," when in reality they're responses that once helped us feel safe.
A New Moon in Cancer seems to whisper a very simple question, though not always easy to answer: what do you need today to feel at home?
Perhaps the answer has nothing to do with walls or addresses. Maybe it has to do with sleeping more hours, with stopping demanding so much of yourself, with cooking something that reminds you of your childhood, with calling someone you miss, with allowing yourself to cry without seeking an explanation. Or perhaps, with realizing you've spent too long trying to find outside the security that can only begin to be built within.
There's something beautiful about this sign's symbolism. While others look toward goals or great achievements, Cancer looks toward what sustains daily life. Toward the shared breakfast, the blanket on the couch, the conversation that soothes, the soup when we're sick, the hug that doesn't try to fix anything. It reminds us that we often confuse success with well-being, when in reality we can have a seemingly perfect life and still feel orphaned from home.
It's no coincidence that Cancer is ruled by the Moon. For thousands of years, the Moon has accompanied the rhythm of the tides, the crops, and countless human traditions. It has always symbolized cycles, changes, and our capacity to renew ourselves. In this sign, that energy becomes especially intimate, quieter, less focused on doing and much more on feeling.
It's also a lunation that tends to awaken memory. Not because the past needs to return to stay, but because sometimes remembering is the only way to understand why we still carry certain emotions. A scent, a song, a family recipe, or a forgotten photograph can open a door we thought was closed. And that's not a step backward—perhaps it's simply an opportunity to look at our history with the eyes we have today.
This New Moon also speaks to us of nourishing. It's curious how we tend to associate that word only with food, when in reality we're nourished by many other things. We're nourished by conversations that leave our chest feeling light, we're nourished by people with whom we don't need to pretend, we're nourished by an unhurried walk, a hot bath, a book that arrives at just the right moment, or an afternoon without obligations. Even silence can feed us when we've spent too long living amid noise.
In the astrological ephemeris for this July 14th, the New Moon occurs very close to Mercury retrograde in Cancer, a symbolism often associated with pending conversations, returning memories, and a review of the way we express what we feel. Additionally, it forms a tension with Saturn in Aries, a combination many astrologers interpret as an invitation to set healthy boundaries, take on emotional responsibilities, and build a security that doesn't depend solely on external circumstances. Like all astrological interpretation, these readings belong to the symbolic realm and don't describe scientifically proven effects.
Perhaps that's the true proposal of this New Moon—not to start an endless list of goals, not to reinvent ourselves overnight. But rather to do something much simpler and, at the same time, much deeper—build a place we can always return to.
Because we all search for a home. Sometimes we believe it's in a different city, in a partner, in a new job, or in the next big dream. But perhaps the most important journey is learning to turn our own body into a safe place, our own mind into a kind refuge, and our own heart into that home where, no matter what happens out there, there's always a light on waiting for us.
And perhaps that's the seed this New Moon comes to plant—not the one to do more, but the one to feel that, little by little, we're learning to inhabit our own life with the same tenderness with which we'd care for someone we love.
