Scorpio and the Underworld

The moment you stop running from your darkness is the moment you stop being controlled by it.

The underworld; sometimes called hell, sometimes explored through the archetype of Scorpio, sometimes spoken of as demons, shadows, or the unseen - it has taken on countless names across cultures and eras.

Every tradition has its own language for it, yet they all point toward the same place: the realm of what is hidden, repressed, feared, or misunderstood.

The underworld is not a distant location beneath the earth. It is the darkness that lives within every human being. It is the part of us that holds our unprocessed emotions, our unmet desires, our wounds, our power, our instincts, and the truths we’ve been taught to avoid.

It is the territory of the psyche that exists outside the light of conscious awareness. And here’s the paradox: the underworld is not inherently evil. It is simply the unlit portion of the self. What we call “darkness” is often just what we have not yet learned to see clearly.

Your relationship to the underworld shapes your entire reality. If you fear it, it becomes a place of monsters. If you deny it, it becomes a place of sabotage. If you demonize it, it becomes a source of shame. But if you approach it with curiosity, reverence, and courage, the underworld becomes a wellspring of transformation. It becomes the place where you reclaim your power, integrate your shadow, and retrieve the parts of yourself you abandoned long ago.

Scorpio is the zodiac’s guide through the underworld because it does not flinch in the presence of truth. Where other signs turn away, Scorpio leans in. It is ruled by Mars and Pluto (the warrior and the transformer) giving Scorpio the rare ability to hold both the wound and the medicine at the same time. Scorpio does not fear the dark because it understands that darkness is simply unclaimed power. It knows that every descent is a doorway, every ending is a threshold, and every shadow contains a fragment of the self, waiting to be reclaimed. Scorpio’s gift is the ability to walk into the depths and return with something sacred.

To embody Scorpio is to understand that transformation is not an aesthetic - it is a process of death and rebirth that happens at the level of the soul. Scorpio teaches that the underworld is not a place you visit once; it is a landscape you learn to navigate throughout your life. Each descent strips away another layer of illusion, another mask, another outdated identity. And each return brings you closer to your essence. Scorpio’s medicine is the reminder that you cannot rise without first surrendering. You cannot awaken without first confronting what sleeps within you. And you cannot claim your power without first meeting the parts of yourself you were taught to fear.

The underworld is not a punishment; it is an initiation. It is the descent that precedes rebirth, the darkness that teaches you how to see, the inner terrain that reveals who you truly are when the masks fall away.

When your perspective on the underworld shifts, your entire life shifts with it. The moment you stop running from your darkness is the moment you stop being controlled by it.

What does this actually mean? It’s important to be clear: this is not an invitation to befriend the devil, nor is it a call to become an evil person or a villain in your own story. It has nothing to do with worshipping darkness or choosing harm. Instead, it speaks to a universal truth found in every spiritual, psychological, and mystical tradition: every human being carries a shadow.

The shadow is not a monster lurking inside you - it is simply the part of yourself you haven’t fully acknowledged, understood, or integrated. It’s the unexpressed emotions, the suppressed instincts, the hidden fears, the unmet needs, the forgotten strengths. It is the “below” that mirrors the “above,” the “within” that shapes the “without.” As the old hermetic principle teaches: as within, so without; as above, so below. Your inner world and outer world are reflections of each other.

To fear your shadow is to fear yourself. To deny it is to give it power over you. When you push your shadow away, it doesn’t disappear - it simply acts from the unconscious, influencing your choices, your relationships, your reactions, and your sense of self without your awareness.

Balancing the shadow means turning toward it with honesty and compassion. It means recognizing that your darkness is not your enemy, it is your teacher. It holds the roots of your being, the raw material of your transformation, the depth that allows your light to have meaning.

When you integrate your shadow, you stop living in an internal hell of avoidance, shame, or self-judgment. You stop fighting yourself. Instead, you become grounded. Whole. Connected to the deepest layers of your existence. And from that rootedness, you can rise into the highest expression of your light.

Your shadow is not the opposite of your light - it is the soil your light grows from. When you embrace both, you become aligned with your full power, your full truth, and your full humanity.
