Tips on how to move through the darkest months

Don’t get me wrong - fall is the best season in my opinion. The leaves are changing colours, nature is turning into warmer colors and the atmosphere is becoming cosier. But we can’t forget about ourselves, witches. I know that we all are feeling the energy shaft and sometimes it does affect us.

Not to mention the seasonal depression that some of us might go through - including myself! Therefore, here are some of my witchy tips to help you move through these months.

🧹 Physical Cleaning = Mental Cleansing

The ancient connection between a clean home and a clear mind is a foundational principle of many magickal traditions. A cluttered, dusty space becomes a magnet for stagnant, low energy. When your home feels heavy, your mind will too.

Personally, I love to clean my hearth - every little corner. This isn’t just physical cleanin,; it's also a powerful act of mental and energetic cleansing. Who doesn't love the feeling of a clean, energetically cleared, and cosy space?

As someone who lives in an old house with multiple apartments, I know the struggle of daily dust and pet fur (especially when they start growing more fur to keep themselves warm)! Maintaining a clean space is critical for mental clarity, especially when working from home.

Here’s my Energetic Home Maintenance Schedule to keep your inner witch feeling more positive:

  • Daily: Wipe down the kitchen counters and altar, sweep the main living area, open windows briefly for fresh air.
  • Weekly: Deep clean the kitchen, dust all surfaces, do a quick smoke cleansing, protect the front door with protection powder.
  • Monthly: Wash all bedding, get rid of all junk, physically move furniture to clean hidden corners, full floor wash.

✍🏻 Grounding & Shadow Work for Stability

While we tend to the external space, we must also tend to the internal one. The dark half of the year encourages us to look inward, which can sometimes be intimidating.

When we are stressed, our energy tends to fly out and scatter. This is the time to anchor yourself firmly in the present moment.

  • Grounding: Practice the Root Visualization whenever you feel anxious. Imagine thick, strong roots extending from the soles of your feet deep into the earth, drawing up strength and stability.
  • Mundane Anchors: Use physical objects as your magickal tools. Hold a smooth stone, touch a piece of wood, or simply press your feet firmly onto the floor. This immediately pulls your awareness back to your body and away from anxious thoughts.

This season is naturally suited for Shadow Work, which is simply the act of acknowledging and integrating the parts of yourself that you repress or ignore (your fears, insecurities, past hurts, trauma etc):

  • Journaling as Self-Care: Your Grimoire or Book of Shadows isn't just for spells - it's a therapeutic tool. Dedicate pages to free-writing your fears, worries, or frustrations without judgment.
  • Ritual of Release: Once written, you can symbolically "banish" or "release" those feelings by safely tearing up the paper, burning it in a cauldron (in a well-ventilated area and fire proof dish), or dissolving it in water. This is an intentional release of mental baggage.

🕯️Hestia, Goddess of the Hearth

When the outside world feels cold, we must tend to the warmth within our hearth. If you are working (or are interested in) with Deities - Hestia will be your best friend for these few months. Only recently I learned about her, and she truly spoke to me. As a homebody, I love making my home feel like a sanctuary. Hestia is the Goddess of the Hearth, Home, and Family - her energy centers on stability, comfort, and the sacredness of the inner sanctum.

Hestia’s magick doesn't demand grand rituals or complex spellwork. Her power is found in the simple, repetitive acts that stabilize your environment and, by extension, your mind. This is about making the mundane sacred:

  • The Candle as the Hearth: In modern practice, your main living area, even a small desk, can be your hearth. Light a simple white candle (safely!) and dedicate the flame to her. This acts as a visual anchor to warmth and peace, reminding you that a stable core exists, even if your mind is chaotic.
  • Sacred Kitchen Witchery: The act of cooking or making tea becomes a devotion to inner nourishment. While stirring soup or brewing a mug of chamomile, mentally ask Hestia to infuse the meal with comfort and sustaining energy.
  • The Magick of Tidying:  Dedicate the act of sweeping, dusting, or decluttering to her. When you wipe down a surface, visualize yourself wiping away mental fog or anxiety.
  • The Inner Hearth: Hestia is often associated with remaining centered and independent. If you feel scattered or overwhelmed, sit quietly for a moment. Place a hand over your heart and visualize a small, steady flame burning there - your inner hearth.

I know that all of this sounds a lot, but you don't have to do all of this at once or everything I mentioned. Remember that your practice is unique to yours, so take what resonates and ignore the rest. Everything I have mentioned here has been working out for me, of course—all of this doesn't happen overnight, it's a process that takes time.

I hope everyone is doing fine and do take care of your Hearth. Blessed be!

Thank you for this, I am struggling with SAD. I struggle to bring myself to consistently keep clean, but viewing the act as sacred helps. I’m lucky to have a partner to help me too!
