Most people arrive at shadow work the hard way.

Something collapses: a relationship, a career, a self-concept that had been load-bearing for years, or nothing collapses exactly, but the weight of what’s been avoided accumulates past the point the surface can hold, and suddenly the underground is not theoretical anymore. It is where they live. The descent happened to them, violently or quietly, and now they are trying to find their way through something they never chose to enter.

Shadow work can happen this way. The underworld does not wait for an invitation.

But there is another way. Older, in some traditions. More demanding, in most. It is the way of the willing descent, of choosing to go down before you are dragged, of carrying a lamp into the dark rather than feeling for walls in the pitch black, of knowing, at least in some provisional way, what you are looking for and how you intend to come back.

This is Persephone’s pat and it is significantly harder than it sounds.

She returns when the work is done. She carries the dark and the light simultaneously, and she is diminished by neither. This is your inheritance from her mythology: the underworld is not something that happens to you. It is a place you can learn to enter on your own terms, find what lives there, and bring it back into the light where it can finally be known.
