On the Subtle Plane

what it is and why you should know about it

You've probably heard this expression: "on the subtle plane." It's used when talking about intuition, premonitions, about things you feel but can't put into words. About connections with departed loved ones. About sudden coincidences that seem anything but random. About thoughts that materialize. But what actually lies behind these words? And is there any practical meaning in this for everyday life, or is it just a beautiful metaphor for those into esoteric topics?

Let's dive in.

🕯️What is the "subtle plane"?

Imagine you're looking at a house. You see its walls, roof, windows—this is the physical, "dense" plane. But this house also has blueprints it was built from, it has energy filling its rooms, it has a history that's lived within it. All of this is the "subtle" plane of that same house.

In esoteric teachings, the "subtle plane" is described as a non-physical space that exists parallel to our material world. It goes by different names: the astral, the mental plane, the world of energies and images. In Hindu tradition, it's Antarloka—the "inner world" in which we exist through thoughts and feelings, and where we fully reside in sleep and after death.

One of the simplest and most vivid metaphors used in discussions of this phenomenon: two people playing chess. Physically, we only see them sitting and occasionally moving pieces. But everything else—their strategy, calculations, tension, intuitions—happens "on the subtle plane." It's an invisible yet completely real part of the process that determines the game's outcome.

The same thing happens in our lives: every event, every encounter, every illness or stroke of luck has its own "underpinning"—a cause that originated not in the material world, but in the world of thoughts, feelings, and intentions. Fear, for example, on the subtle plane looks like a cold hardening that slows energetic flows in the body.

This doesn't mean everything is predetermined. Rather, it means we have two-way movement: we make choices in the physical world, they project onto the subtle plane and return to us as consequences. We are the architects of our own happiness, but we work not only with a hammer, but also with thought.

🧬 Subtle bodies - our invisible anatomy

If the subtle plane is the "stage," then our subtle bodies are the "actors" on that stage. It's believed that besides the physical body, a person has several energetic sheaths nested within each other like matryoshka dolls. Their existence is described in various spiritual traditions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Sufism, Taoism, Theosophy.

Here are the most basic ones:

  1. Etheric body (Zharye body) - the sheath closest to the physical. It mirrors its structure and serves as a kind of "matrix" by which the physical body is built. It's what protects against energetic influences (evil eye, curses) and stores information about our energy.
  2. Astral body (Navye body) - the world of emotions, desires, and feelings. This is what we travel in during sleep, experiencing dreams. Slavs called this world Nav—the world of spirits inhabited by house spirits, forest spirits, and other beings.
  3. Mental body - the world of thoughts, beliefs, ideas. It's responsible for how we perceive reality and interpret events.
  4. Causal (karmic) body - the deepest sheath, connected to our destiny, karma, and profound life lessons.

In each tradition, these bodies are described differently, but the essence remains the same: we are not just flesh. We are a complex energy-information system.

🔍 How to "see" on the subtle plane? (And does everyone need to?)

The ability to see on the subtle plane is often called clairvoyance. This isn't magic, but rather a skill—the ability to shift your consciousness from a state of "sight" (physical perception) to a state of "seeing" (perception of energies and images).

How does it work? Imagine someone blindfolds you and places an unfamiliar object in your hands. You feel it, weigh it, and an image, a picture of this object begins forming in your mind. You don't see it with your eyes, but you "see" it with your consciousness. This is seeing on the subtle plane, except instead of hands, it's your attention directed at the object that does the work.

In esoteric circles, it's believed that every person can develop this ability—just as you can develop musical ear or sense of rhythm. This requires training, practice, and most importantly, a calm, focused mind. However, it's important to distinguish real seeing from your own fantasies: if you see vivid pictures but don't feel any changes in your body (chills, warmth, tingling), it's likely your imagination drawing images rather than genuine perception of the subtle plane.

But is it necessary to "see" the subtle plane to work with it?

Not at all. The most important thing is being able to feel. Intuition is also working on the subtle plane. The premonition that you shouldn't go to that meeting. A sudden thought that turns out to be right. The sense that someone's in the room though you're alone. All of this—your subtle bodies are already at work, you just don't give it a name.

🌿How to work with the subtle plane in everyday life

For most of us, the "subtle plane" isn't about clairvoyance and astral travel. It's about conscious living. Here are some simple ways to start working with it.

1. Monitor your thoughts and feelings. If everything on the subtle plane begins with thoughts and emotions, then they're what create your reality. Anger, resentment, anxiety, suspicions—all of this isn't just "mood." These are blueprints you're laying into your future.

2. Learn to recognize what's "yours" versus "someone else's." Empaths often absorb others' emotions without realizing it. You feel tired or sad—but whose feeling is it? Maybe you "caught" it from someone you talked to an hour ago. The ability to distinguish your own from others' is an important skill for keeping your subtle plane clear.

3. Practice silence. Seeing on the subtle plane requires a calm, focused mind. If you're constantly loaded with thoughts, you'll never hear the quiet signals of intuition. Ten minutes of complete silence a day is more than just rest.

4. Take care of your body. The etheric body (your energetic protection) is directly connected to the physical. A healthy lifestyle, proper nutrition, body care—this is also work with the subtle plane that makes you less vulnerable to negative influences.

5. Cleanse your space. A home isn't just walls. It's a place where your energy lives. Air out rooms, light candles, clear out old things that carry negative memories. Space, like us, needs cleaning.

6. Pay attention to signs. If something seems "not coincidental" to you—it isn't. Coincidences aren't random. It's your intuition or guides on the subtle plane trying to draw your attention to something important.

🪞 In closing: The subtle plane as a mirror of the soul

"On the subtle plane" isn't about magic or scary stories about spirits. It's about how we're constantly creating reality without even realizing it. Every time we get angry, fear, rejoice, or dream, we're laying a blueprint on the subtle plane. And sooner or later, this blueprint will manifest in the physical world.

The question isn't whether you can see the subtle plane. The question is what blueprints you're laying there. What thoughts are you sowing? What feelings are you carrying? What people are you attracting?

The answers to these questions are your most important work "on the subtle plane."

P.S. If you want to dive deeper into this topic, start with a dream journal or the practice of observing your thoughts throughout the day. You'll be surprised how much "subtle" you'll discover in your ordinary life. 🌙
