LIFE IS NOT A DESTINATION. IT'S A JOURNEY...
Why the joy of achievement fades so quickly
Article · 3 min read · ·

John Lennon sang:
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".
We run. We build. We strive.
We think: "Once we get there—then we'll really start living."
But life is passing us by all the while...
🏔 THE SUMMIT, THEN SILENCE...
We believe that achieving our dream is the finale.
That there, at the peak, peace awaits us.
And we make it.
Joy washes over us—bright, burning, long-awaited.
We're riding high 🌊
And then—a sharp, hollow drop...
It happens suddenly, like a gut punch.
Inside—emptiness and disappointment.
As if the mountain we climbed for so long suddenly vanished.
And we're falling...
Why?
Because our psyche quickly adapts to the good.
What seemed like a dream yesterday is the norm today.
And the brain demands a new peak. A new goal. A new emotional fix.
So we get caught in an endless race:
the more we achieve—the more we want.
And we never stop...
Then comes burnout.
Depression.
Or the feeling: "I'm doing everything, but I don't feel joy or taste in life."
WHY THIS HAPPENS
There's another reason too.
When we're moving toward a goal—we have meaning.
We know where we're going. We feel the tension. We live in anticipation.
But when the goal is reached—meaning disappears.
For a time. Until a new goal appears.
It's like breathing in and breathing out.
While moving—we inhale.
Achieved—we exhale.
And for a moment—emptiness.
This is normal.
But if we don't give ourselves a break—the emptiness turns into a hole that begins to suck us in and pull us into an abyss of sadness and disappointment.
🌿 WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT
The answer is simple. And difficult at the same time.
We need to learn to live in the process...
Not wait for the goal to make us happy.
But be happy now. Along the way.
Because a goal is a point.
And the process is the whole road to it.
And if we only rejoice at the point while ignoring the road—
we'll miss all of life, we won't get to fully savor it.
HOW TO DO THIS
✨ Notice the small steps.
Today we made one call.
Wrote one page.
Said "no" to what isn't ours.
This is movement. This is already a result.
✨ Enjoy the process.
Not "when we achieve—then."
But now.
The taste of morning coffee. Warm light through the window. A conversation with someone close.
All of this is life.
✨ Live through the day, even if it's not perfect.
Even if something didn't work out.
Even if there were mistakes.
We lived this day. We were here.
And that's already quite something.
✨ Rest after reaching a goal.
Don't rush straight to the next one.
Allow yourself a pause.
Emptiness isn't a hole. It's space for something new.
✨ Remember: life is not a destination. It's a journey.
Life is happening now.
While we're making plans—it's passing by.
Happiness isn't in achievement.
Happiness is in living.
When we learn to enjoy the process—we'll stop chasing.
We'll start living.
And the goals?
They'll come.
But no longer as salvation.
Rather as a natural continuation of the journey.
I want to end this article with John Lennon's words as well, which are especially relevant now:
"Imagine all the people living life in peace".
Unfortunately, it's not that way yet.
The world around is different.
But we can start with ourselves—build peace within: in our soul, in our home, in our thoughts and hearts...
Preserve it and believe. Believe that one day this will become reality for everyone.
Because peace on the planet begins with peace in one person.
With you.
With me.
With us.
"You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one"...
