A quick read for anyone curious about crystals: The why, energy, picking, placement, and more ! <3
Why Use Crystals?

Let’s start with the obvious: crystals are beautiful. There’s no replacing the atmosphere they bring into a space just by existing in it. But I’d argue, that the beauty is doing more than decorating…it’s cleansing. When something is this visually striking, it resets the energy of a space and replaces it with something intentional.
However! I also think crystals are a way to channel your energy into frequency. It's a catalyst..a host to hold energy. The physical stone is a representation of your intention, and honestly, the color is often exactly what you’re after. Most guides online skim right past the how and why of this, so I want to slow down and actually explain it.
In Summary: A crystal is a physical reminder of the energy you’re trying to hold onto, while still looking effortlessly stylish!
The Energy-Placement Connection

Now, placement matters when it comes to crystals if you want to get the most out of them. You don't have to place every crystal in a specific spot, but knowing where can help bring out more benefits. So, every room in your home holds a different energy, and choosing the right crystal for the right spot, can enhance or calm that energy.
An example is placing a rose quartz in your bedroom.
Benefits/ Properties of Rose Quartz Include:
- opening and softening the heart chakra
- supporting romantic connection and self-compassion
- calming energy for an emotional reset space
This works on a micro level too! So not just per room, but per purpose within a room. Take that same rose quartz and place it under your pillow or on your nightstand. This will give the same benefits as before, but it helps with gentler dreams and a softer emotional tone before bed.
Starter Stones + Where to Place Them + How to Pick
Now that your interest is piqued — I get it, there are so many stones out there, and researching all of them takes real time and effort. So here’s a well-rounded starter kit to get you going:
- Rose Quartz — love/self-love, calming energy → bedroom, living room
- Black Tourmaline — protection/grounding → front door, entryway
- Citrine — abundance/energy → desk, kitchen
- Amethyst (my personal top pick) — calm/intuition → bedroom, meditation space

Picking Your Crystals
A big disclaimer! At the end of the day, picking your crystals comes down to your intuition and color choices. What draws your eye is often exactly what you need, so always do your own research beyond this list, and choose what you actually want to come home to, not just what a guide tells you. Going in person to see the crystals and hold them is vital. My suggestion is to bring a small budget to a spiritual store or crystal shop and just look and touch. See what crystals draw you and do research on what energy those crystals carry. You can also prepare a small wish list/cheat sheet too and see if what you think you need matches the vibes you get from the crystals at the store.
My Experience
During my first crystal run, I was very drawn to a moonstone and black tourmaline, but I only purchased the moonstone that day. I then went home and did more research, and found myself going back to purchase that black tourmaline for protection, as I do have a very sensitive energy field. Over time, my spiritual practice and crystal work grew together. Focusing on energy protection, calming vibes, and replenishing my personal surroundings. My crystals reflect that need.
Crystal Forms: How Shape Changes the Energy

Once you start shopping around, you’ll notice crystals don’t just come in different colors — they also come in different shapes. And the shape matters just as much, because it changes how the energy moves. Here are some basic shapes that change/modify the energy:
- Rough Cut/Raw — Straight from the earth into the palm of your hand. This is the most natural, unfiltered form of a crystal’s energy. Nothing is shaping or altering the stone’s intention, which makes it a perfect starting point for beginners. You’re getting the energy exactly as it is, but this also includes polished stones in my belief.
- Sphere — Energy radiates evenly in every direction. It’s the opposite of focused; it's more muffled and dispersed into the air, like a candle filling a room with scent. Perfect for filling an entire space; best kept on a shelf or altar.
- Point/Prism (Tower) — The opposite of a sphere, thanks to its pointed edge; this shape directs energy like a beam, condensing it into one spot like a flashlight. It's ideal for manifestation work, any time you want to aim an intention somewhere specific, or want a specific energy condensed into one spot (nice for spells!).
- Pendulum — A stone on a chain, used as a tool rather than a placement piece. Hold it still, ask a yes-or-no question, and read the direction it swings or circles as your answer. Everyone interprets this a little differently…which, once again, shows how much of this practice comes down to intuition. It’s less about atmosphere and more about tapping into guidance.
- Pendant/Jewelry — Wearable crystal energy. Instead of a fixed spot, it offers continuous support wherever you go. I personally have a very sensitive energy field. I pick up on bad vibes from people, or they drain my energy, so I wear a black tourmaline pendant to help guard against that and remind myself to form my energy into a bubble for protection.
Caring for Your Crystals
Crystals are surprisingly easy to care for! Most can be rinsed in water and left in the sun for a short time. But some are way more sensitive than that. Amethyst, for example, can bleach and lose its vibrancy in direct sunlight, while stones like malachite shouldn’t be submerged in water at all. Malachite can release toxic compounds when wet, and selenite can dissolve in water. Always look into your specific stones and care for them accordingly! At the end of the day, crystals are natural materials, and like anything from the earth, they can react to other natural elements like water, oils, sunlight, or heat.
Simple Starter Ritual
Always cleanse your crystal the moment you bring it home...always. This can be done through passing the stone through smoke or incense, soaking/rinsing in water (moon water or ocean water), earth cleansing (burying the stone), and a few other methods. I personally lean toward natural methods like the ones above to draw out any old energy the stone might be carrying. Specifically, I like passing them through incense smoke, so there are no chance of scratching or damaging the crystal.
From there, you can place a new intention simply by meditating or praying with the stone or speaking/thinking about the energy you want it to hold. Once that’s set, place it with purpose in your designated spot.
Revisit it as needed. Re-cleanse and re-set the intention over time and more often for crystals in regular use, and especially during full or new moons, when spiritual energy runs high, and the veil feels thin. But be wary of specific astrological events too; if you practice in those areas, be aware of those changes as well as the moon.
Full Moon: Best for maximum energy, resetting intentions, and deep purification.
New Moon: Best for fresh starts, setting new intentions, and attracting new opportunities.
Waxing Moon: Best for charging stones used for growth, abundance, personal healing, and taking action.
Waning Moon: Best for charging protective stones or crystals intended to help you release habits, stress, or negative energy
Closing
Adding crystals to your practice is a beautiful way to step into energy work. It strengthens intuition and spiritual connection by giving shape to your goals and intentions as a practitioner. I love working with crystals as they have strengthened my own practice. I hope your collection and your comfort with crystals grow after this article! Thank you so much for reading!
