There is a wisdom in nature that reveals itself not to those who merely look, but to those who learn to respect it.
Ossaim, also known as Ossain or Ossanha, is the Orisha of leaves, herbs, and sacred knowledge of nature. In the traditions, his domain is deeply connected to the knowledge that allows us to recognize and use plants in healing and religious rituals.
In Umbanda, some houses celebrate Ossaim on October 5th, associating his date with Saint Benedict.
๐ฑ The mystery that lives in the leaves
In nature, each leaf carries a story: its roots, its growth, its relationship with the earth, water, sun, and time.
Ossaim brings us closer to an ancestral wisdom that recognizes in plants much more than resources available for human use. In the terreiros, leaves hold sacred importance and specific functions, passed down through the knowledge and foundations of each tradition.
Without knowing the secrets of the leaves, one cannot fully understand the power they hold in the worship of the Orishas.
Honoring Ossaim also means recognizing the value of those who preserved this knowledge across generations. It means respecting our elders, learning before practicing, and understanding that not all sacred knowledge is available outside its religious context.
๐ Teachings of Ossaim
Ossaim invites us to slow down and observe. In a world that demands immediate answers, nature teaches us that knowledge requires time, attention, and responsibility.
It also reminds us that caring for nature means recognizing our connection to that which sustains life. We don't need to pick leaves from a plant or perform a ritual to show respect: observing, preserving, and learning are already acts of reverence.
๐ฟ practice of connection
On this day, choose a plant you have at home or observe a tree for a few minutes. Notice its shapes, its colors, and its needs. Research the species and discover how to care for it properly. When finished, reflect: what have I received from nature without recognizing the value of this gift?
โจ
May the wisdom of the leaves teach us to care before we harvest, learn before we teach, and respect before we transform.
Ewรฉ รณ! Ewรฉ รณ! May we learn to recognize the power of nature and honor the knowledge that keeps our ancestral heritage alive.
