When fresh waters become a pathway of faith, protection, and memory, October 12th holds a special place in the heart of Brazil. For Catholics, it is the feast day of Our Lady of Aparecida, Patron Saint of Brazil. For many Umbanda houses and Afro-Brazilian communities, the same date is dedicated to Oxum, the Orixรก of fresh waters. This convergence is one of the most striking expressions of Brazilian religious syncretism, but it requires an essential truth: Oxum is not Our Lady of Aparecida, and Our Lady of Aparecida is not Oxum. They are figures from distinct traditions whose history deserves to be honored with respect and discernment! โจ
๐ Stories that crossed the waters
- The Catholic tradition: In 1717, an image of Our Lady was found by fishermen in the waters of the Paraรญba do Sul River, giving birth to an unwavering national devotion.
- The terreiro tradition: Oxum governs the rivers, the springs, love, and fertility. The image of a mother found within a river established, for many lineages, a profound connection with the Lady of Fresh Waters.
- The resistance: Syncretism was also born from the need for survival in the face of persecution of Black culture during the slavery period. It is a testament to resistance, not a fusion of identities. ๐ค
๐ฟ Practice for the day โ The Circle of Waters and Sweetness Let's honor this date with a mindful and safe ritual to connect with the energy of fresh waters:
- Open your space: Gather 1 liter of water, petals from a yellow rose, a handful of chamomile, and mentally trace a circle of peace and respect around you. Take three deep breaths.
- The sacred infusion: Heat the water, turn off the heat, add the herbs and cover for 10 minutes. Strain and let it reach a comfortable temperature.
- The spell of renewal: Take your usual cleansing bath. Then, pour the infusion from your neck down (taking care to avoid allergies or mucous membranes).
- The prayers of alignment: Before or during the bath, visualize or speak:
"I open this space of faith and truth. May I recognize my worth, know how to receive what life offers, and may my heart find sweetness without losing its strength."
Close the cycle: Give thanks and carry this harmony into your day, cultivating wisdom and clarity.
โจ The teaching of the two waters: Water need not erase differences to create pathways of encounter. May this October 12th bring sweetness without submission and respect for all forms of faith!
