Unlocking the Unseen Part One: The Clair Senses

The First Part in a Series on A Guide to Psychic Abilities

Psychic abilities have fascinated humanity since the dawn of time. Across cultures and centuries, shamans, seers, prophets, and mystics have served as bridges between the physical and spiritual realms—receiving visions, sensing energies, and delivering messages that defy logic yet ring deeply true. From the oracles of Delphi to the dream interpreters of ancient Egypt, the wisdom of the unseen has always been with us, evolving with language, belief, and practice.

In modern times, psychic abilities are often misunderstood—viewed either with skepticism or sensationalized in pop culture. Yet for many, these gifts remain a quiet, powerful part of life. They offer insight, healing, and connection—not just to spirit, but to one’s deeper self.

In this multi-part series, we’ll explore the many expressions of psychic ability. We’ll look at how they manifest, how they can be developed, and how they can be integrated with mindfulness and care. From clair senses to mediumship, from precognition to aura reading, each part will focus on a different category of psychic skill.

In This First Installment: Exploring the Clair Senses

To begin, we’ll explore what is often considered the foundation of psychic development—the clair senses. These are intuitive extensions of our five physical senses that allow us to receive extrasensory information from people, places, objects, and spirit. Far from fantasy, they are experienced by many in subtle ways and can be strengthened through awareness and practice.

Introduction to the Clair Senses

The word clair comes from the French word for “clear,” and each clair sense represents a specific type of clear intuitive perception. Just as we see, hear, touch, smell, and taste in the physical world, the clair senses reflect how we experience the energetic or spiritual world.

Each clair aligns with a corresponding physical sense but operates through the energetic body, higher self, or subconscious mind. They include:

  • Clairvoyance – clear seeing
  • Clairaudience – clear hearing
  • Clairsentience – clear feeling
  • Claircognizance – clear knowing
  • Clairalience – clear smelling
  • Clairgustance – clear tasting
  • Clairtangency (Psychometry) – clear touching

While some people naturally excel in one or two clairs, others experience a blend. These abilities often work together during readings, dreamwork, or moments of heightened awareness. Understanding these individual clairs gives us a fuller picture of the many ways psychic insight can present itself.

Exploring the Clair Senses

Let’s now explore each clair sense in more depth, looking at how they manifest, how they might feel in everyday life, and how they can be nurtured and developed.

Clairvoyance – Clear Seeing

Clairvoyance is one of the most recognized psychic abilities. It allows someone to see visions, symbols, scenes, or even spirits within the mind’s eye (also called the third eye). These visual impressions may appear spontaneously or in response to a question, meditation, or moment of emotional intensity.

For example, a clairvoyant may visualize a symbolic image, like a rose representing love or healing, or receive a premonitory vision of a future event. Some may even perceive spirit forms or energetic patterns around people.

Historical figures such as Edgar Cayce and Nostradamus were known for their clairvoyant insights. Developing this ability often involves working with dream recall, guided imagery, or intuitive visual tools like oracle cards or crystals.

Clairaudience – Clear Hearing

Clairaudience is the ability to hear messages from beyond the physical world. These may sound like thoughts in your own mind, whispered words, music, tones, or full conversations. The voice may be internal or external, but it carries a clarity and presence that feels distinct from ordinary thought.

This clair can be particularly moving, especially when hearing comforting words from a departed loved one or receiving poetic inspiration out of nowhere. A classic example is Joan of Arc, who claimed to hear the voices of saints—including St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret—urging her toward her divine mission.

People with strong clairaudience often find themselves receiving insights during quiet time or writing sessions. Strengthening this sense involves practicing inner stillness, meditating with sound frequencies, and discerning your own thoughts from incoming intuitive messages.

Clairsentience – Clear Feeling

Clairsentience is the psychic sense of emotional and energetic awareness. A clairsentient may physically feel another person’s emotions, sense a spiritual presence, or be affected by the “mood” of a space.

This intuitive sensitivity is often described as a gut feeling or wave of emotion that doesn’t logically belong to the experiencer. Clairsentients may feel a heaviness when someone is grieving, or sudden joy when spirit energy is near.

Empaths often fall into this category. Because this clair can be overwhelming, it’s important for those with clairsentience to practice energetic hygiene—such as grounding, aura cleansing, and protective shielding—to avoid emotional overload.

Claircognizance – Clear Knowing

Claircognizance is the sudden knowing of something without any prior knowledge or explanation. It’s the intuitive hit that comes out of nowhere—a spontaneous truth that “drops in.”

Claircognizants may just know the answer to a problem or feel strongly that something is about to happen. This ability often appears during decision-making or in moments of reflection, and it typically bypasses emotional confusion with a strong sense of certainty.

Because this clair relies on trust, self-doubt can block it. Journaling intuitive downloads and reviewing them over time is a good practice for building confidence in this form of intuitive intelligence.

Clairalience – Clear Smelling

Clairalience allows someone to psychically smell scents that are not physically present. These are often connected to spirit communication or memory recall. For instance, one might suddenly smell a deceased grandmother’s perfume, fresh tobacco, or a particular flower tied to a loved one’s funeral.

Smell is a powerful emotional trigger, so this ability often evokes strong personal memories. Clairalient messages may serve as validation of spirit presence or reminders of meaningful events.

Although it’s less common than the more well-known clairs, clairalience is often experienced during mediumship or in spaces with strong emotional residue. Strengthening this sense may include scent memory meditations or using aromatherapy to anchor intuitive responses.

Clairgustance – Clear Tasting

Clairgustance is the psychic ability to taste something that isn’t actually in your mouth. These phantom tastes often appear during mediumship sessions or intuitive readings as symbolic connections.

For example, a psychic might suddenly taste apple pie and realize it was a loved one’s favorite dessert. Or they might taste something bitter while sensing someone’s emotional pain. The information can be literal or metaphorical, depending on the context.

Though rare, this clair can deliver surprisingly precise validations during spiritual communication. To explore this sense, pay attention to any spontaneous tastes you notice during intuitive work and trace them to emotions, memories, or spiritual presence.

Clairtangency (Psychometry) – Clear Touching

Clairtangency, also known as psychometry, is the ability to receive impressions from objects by physically touching them. Information about the object’s owner, emotional residue, or even events tied to its history can surface through contact.

For example, someone with this gift might touch an old wedding ring and instantly feel the love—or pain—connected to the person who wore it. It’s also commonly activated during paranormal investigations or ancestral readings.

This ability is particularly strong in those who are naturally tactile and sensitive to physical energy. It can be developed by holding personal objects and recording the impressions that arise, then confirming the details with the object’s owner or history.

Reflections on the Clair Senses

Understanding the clair senses opens the door to deeper spiritual awareness. These abilities—whether visual, auditory, emotional, or physical—offer subtle but powerful ways to perceive the world beyond what is immediately visible. They help bridge the inner and outer worlds, allowing us to receive messages, warnings, guidance, and healing through intuitive channels that are as ancient as the soul itself.

While not everyone will develop all the clairs, most people can nurture one or more with patience, practice, and openness. Tuning in to these senses doesn’t require a special gift—just a willingness to listen, feel, and trust.

When honored and respected, the clair senses serve as sacred tools. They teach us to pay attention, remain present, and deepen our connection with the universe, the spirit world, and our own higher self.
