The Art of Smudging Spaces

Including options for those who can't for health reasons, and a personal experience
Today we're covering a basic topic for those wanting to dive into the "witchy" world or simply learn to cleanse their living and working spaces of unwanted energy. At the end, I'll share a personal experience😉🙄
Smudging is an energetic cleansing technique using smoke—with bundles, herbs, and incense, we can clear all the things from our homes that we can't see but deeply feel.
1. What do I need?
- White sage (bundle)
- Palo Santo (natural wood)
- Heat-resistant container
- Matches
- Any other plant that resonates with your intention, like bay leaf or rosemary
There's a ritual in Spain that involves burning rosemary every Friday with the following chant:
"Rosemary, rosemary, out with the bad and in with the good"
2. How do I light and burn my materials?
SAGE
Light the tip with a match.
Let the flame catch for a few seconds, then gently blow it out.
You should have smoke, not flame, and very importantly, don't breathe in more smoke than necessary. Above all, take care of your health and that of your loved ones in any practice, and if you have respiratory issues, perhaps these methods aren't for you—but don't worry, I'll give you options at the end😉
PALO SANTO
Light one end of the palo santo.
Let the flame catch for a few seconds and gently blow it out.
You should have smoke, not fire or flame. Again, please take care of your health.
It's worth noting that some people suggest palo santo should be burned last, once you feel the cleansing is complete and you want to seal in that good energy of the moment.
3. Intention
Before you begin, connect with yourself and speak your intention out loud or in your mind. Repeat it like a mantra.
Examples:
"I release all burdens, all negative energy, and all energy that no longer belongs to this home"
"I release the old, I attract the new, I release what doesn't belong to me, I attract new opportunities"
"I return all this energy that isn't mine and make space for what truly resonates with me"
4. Smudging Order
🌀Which direction?
Always move clockwise and maintain a steady direction—don't spin around aimlessly or leave any spaces unsmudged
🪟Doors/Windows
Start at the corner farthest from the main entrance and begin with the corners and windows
🏘️Spaces
Move through the entire space with the smoke—even if an area seems insignificant, spend more time where the energy feels denser
📐Corners
Linger for a few seconds in each corner. These are key spots where stagnant energy accumulates.
🏹Directions
As mentioned, move clockwise, but do so expansively—extend your arm fully, bringing the smoke to both the ceiling and floor
🏺People/Objects
Smudge all the objects you wish to cleanse and, importantly, ⚠️ only smudge people if they have no health issues and actually need or want this cleansing—never impose or force anyone. 🛑
🐈 🐕 🐦 DO NOT smudge pets—they only need to live in a space free of negative energies. For them, you can try crystal cleansing by carefully placing crystals on their back ⚠️
5. Finishing Up
Give Thanks
Give thanks to all the elements you used, including the home/space you've cleansed.
Air Out
Don't close the windows right away—let the negative energy flow out and disappear.
Extinguish and Prevent Accidents
NEVER leave bundles or incense burning unattended—extinguish them in the dish you used or on a handful of salt.
Once you've finished…
Close the windows if you want to.
What do I do if I have respiratory issues or smudging is incompatible with my lifestyle?
We mentioned earlier that when in doubt, it's better not to smudge. This type of cleansing seeks harmony and well-being, so if your physical condition—or that of a family member or pet—makes this incompatible, it's best not to perform this practice. But… don't worry! Here are some ideal and equally effective alternatives for everyone:
You'll only need a spray bottle with a bit of vinegar and salt, and a cleaning cloth. With this mixture, go window by window and door by door (especially the main one), cleaning clockwise.
You can add a gemstone or essential oil to the spray bottle if you don't like the scent of vinegar.
I hope you enjoyed this ✨🤍
Personal experience:
A few months ago, I moved into a beautiful penthouse in pretty good condition with ocean views. During our visits before buying, everything seemed to be in order and in perfect condition, ready to move in. When my boyfriend and I moved in, we began to see that the house wasn't as well-maintained as we thought in terms of cleanliness and small details. The energy was quite negative and heavy, and we even questioned whether we'd made the right choice buying that penthouse… Once we finished the physical cleaning of the house, I began the spiritual cleansing. I smudged the entire space with sage and rue several times over 3 days and even cleaned the floors and windows with vinegar and salt. As soon as I performed these small rituals, the house took on a different "color." We began to feel at home, slept through the entire night without waking, and even started feeling grateful to the house—and felt the house was grateful to us. The house didn't need major renovations or expensive furniture—it just wanted someone who would be in perfect harmony with it ✨
