Magical ways to make your resolutions work in 2026
For each complete orbit of Earth around the sun, it’s impossible not to comprehend this moment as magical, after all, the New Year’s is a time of renewal, celebration for the year past and welcoming the year beginning. Each culture has a tradition around it, we select lucky foods according to our region’s tradition, we do certain rituals like opening all the doors to let the old year out, eating grapes under the table to make wishes, or maybe you pick the color of your underwear to bring that specific inflection for your year. In the northern hemisphere while it's still winter, it’s a great time to make your resolutions, make your rituals to set it in stone and to prepare your next moves for spring, or, if you’re in the southern hemisphere like me, you can enjoy the summer practices of casting away the shadows of the past and preparing your harvest. Either way, it doesn’t change the magical times the holidays bring.
In 2026, this renewal energy will be heavily potentialized since we’re ending a year 9 and entering a year 1. The number 9 brings the idea of a last stretch to reach certain goals and ending cycles, while the number 1 is the fresh start, like we just faced winter and now we’re heading to spring. Tarot-wise, 2025 was the year ruled by The Hermit, the card of inner reflection and inner wisdom, and entering a year ruled by The Wheel of Fortune, maximizing this idea of starting fresh in 2026. For this next year, you can expect things ending for good, but also new opportunities arriving. If you want a big change in your life, this is the year to do so. Now we will explore practices for you to utilize this energy for your greater benefit.
Reflective practice
First, let’s revise the year that has passed. What do you feel you accomplished this year? Mind you that this doesn’t need to be all material gains or milestones set by societal expectations, it can also be the small steps you took that you’re proud of. If you had a rough year, that’s okay too! This is progress as well.
Next, let’s understand how you are feeling about this year after seeing what you did. Do you feel joy? Anger? Shame? Contentment? No matter how you feel, sit with this feeling, even if it’s unpleasant. Accept what this year has brought you, the complexity of emotions that arise, name all of them and give them space to exist. Then gently, try to understand what you wished to do differently. What were the lessons you can take from all of the significant experiences of 2025? No need to be harsh on yourself here, remember that you did the best you could with the resources you had at that moment, you’re still growing and learning as you will be until your life is over.
With all this understanding of the year past, you can then start to understand the next steps you’ll take in the next year. Considering what you want to change and the person you want to become, what realistic goals can you set for yourself? Maybe you can work on your finances and what habits you want to break, or work on your shyness to be a more expressive person, or even make a trip you’ve been wanting to make for a long time. Whatever are the things you want to change, remember that you don’t need to methodically set all the steps now and that if needed, you can change your resolutions each month to suit your needs, and it’s important you can review these goals and wishes constantly throughout the year, so you can turn this last step into a dream map, a list, a moodboard, anything you want.
This practice will help you have a clear vision on what you want to accomplish in the next year and how you can benefit from this renewal energy to start your new year with the right foot.
A release ritual
This ritual can be done after you did the last exercise. What do you need to let go from 2025? What weights do you want to release yourself from when entering 2026? This ritual can be as simple or as complicated as you want depending on the space you have available, but essentially all you’ll need is a piece of paper, rosemary, a cord, a place to burn things and somewhere to bury the remains.
First, write on the paper all the things you want to release. You can use a simple affirmation for that, like “In 2026, I release myself free from ____. May the ashes of the past be buried to never return. May this space be clear to hold new blessings.” Next, you’ll want to fold the petition away from you three times, then bind it with the cord of your choosing, preferably a black thread, repeating the affirmation written on the paper. After that, burn the paper with some rosemary incense, that has the ability to put an end to situations in a peaceful way. You can either burn rosemary on a charcoal disc or use regular incense, all that’s important is that it must have the plant in the components. With the remaining ashes, you will collect them and bury them somewhere far away from your home, or if you don’t have the place for it, blow it away by the front entrance of your house or in a window that will blow it away from your property as well.
Pinecone for setting the blessings to come
For setting your wishes and goals, there is a simple but highly effective spell to make it at midnight or on the 1st of the year, all you will need is a pinecone, paper and some kind of magnetism water, like rose water/tincture. Pinecones symbolize fertility and growth and it’s also a seed, making a great vessel to set your next year’s intentions. First, write on separate pieces of papers your wishes for 2026, imbue them with intention and if you want, spray some rose water with the intention of attracting these wishes to you. Next, put the pieces of paper inside the pinecone, and if you want, you can use a candle of your choosing to amplify the spell and bring light into the new year. Personally I’d choose a candle made with coconut wax or beeswax for this purpose, since both of them also have ties with fertility and manifestations. You can keep the pinecone in your desk, altar or in any place suitable, and you can feed it throughout the year with the same magnetism water.
With all these rituals you’ll be more than ready to welcome 2026 with a bang, but remember that spellwork is not a miracle, keep your goals visible in your phone, your planner and anywhere it will be seen, so you can constantly adjust your plans and actions during the year to reach what you set for yourself. I hope 2026 can bring you all the blessings you wish for, but mostly that you find happiness and joy in the process.
