A Birthday Banishing Ritual
Birthdays Are Powerful Portals. Use Them With Caution.

My birthday just passed, and I felt a strong urge to start a new tradition as I entered this new cycle of my life. I’ve always believed birthdays are special. In fact, I’ve always seen them as portals. A doorway into a new season, a new phase, or even a completely new version of ourselves.
And while I’ve always loved celebrating my birthday, over the past few years I realized I had somehow forgotten how meaningful this day was to me.
I had invited people into my celebrations who, looking back, didn’t seem to be there with genuinely open hearts. And whether intentionally or not, I often ended up feeling emotionally drained and exhausted.
This year, I wanted something different.
I decided to celebrate surrounded only by people who make me feel genuinely happy, loved, welcomed, and appreciated. People whose presence brings me peace rather than anxiety.
And on that day, I decided to perform a little intuitive banishing ritual. I didn’t follow a specific recipe or tradition. I simply gathered ingredients based on what I felt drawn to and what each one symbolized to me.
🖤 A black candle: Not just because it was literally the only candle I had at home (although that’s also true), but because black candles are traditionally associated with powerful protection, banishing, and the release of unwanted energies when used with intention.
🧂 Coarse salt: Used in many spiritual practices for purification, cleansing negative energy, and creating protective boundaries.
🌿 Cloves: Traditionally associated with protection, strength, and warding off unwanted influences. I wanted something that symbolized keeping negativity away without wishing harm upon anyone.
🌱 Rosemary: Something I only recently learned has a long history of spiritual symbolism. It’s associated with cleansing, protection, mental clarity, and renewal. It felt especially meaningful for starting a new chapter.
✨ A little cinnamon: Associated with warmth, vitality, abundance, and positive energy. Because I didn’t want this ritual to be only about what I was releasing, but also about what I was welcoming into my life.
I placed the black candle in the centre of a small plate and carefully arranged the coarse salt, cloves, and rosemary around it.
I saved the cinnamon for last. As I lit the candle and began reciting my intentions, I gently sprinkled a little cinnamon onto the plate, away from the flame, allowing each word to carry the meaning of what I was ready to release.

“I release all attachments that disturb my peace.
I let go of resentment, pain, and energies that no longer belong to me.
I return to myself what I have given away in fear, anger, or sorrow.
I wish no harm upon anyone, but I no longer welcome their influence into my life.
I detach. I protect myself. I move forward in peace.”
For me, this was about consciously releasing what no longer belonged in my life, and understanding that I can wish people well without allowing them to occupy my emotional space.
And here’s the interesting part, since my birthday, I’ve noticed something shifting within me.
Situations, memories, and people who once occupied an enormous amount of space in my mind suddenly don’t seem to hold the same power over me anymore.
Things that once triggered endless thoughts and emotional reactions now feel strangely distant. Not necessarily forgotten, just no longer as important.
I don’t know whether it was the ritual itself, the intention behind it, or simply the fact that I was finally ready to let go.
But I do know that something feels different, and maybe that’s what entering a new cycle is really about. Not changing the past, not changing other people, but changing how much space we’re willing to give them in our future.
Birthdays are powerful portals. Be mindful of what you carry through them.
