A practice to return to your body, to the present, and to what sustains your life

Earth is the element of matter. It is where seeds find space to germinate, roots grow deep, and nature's cycles take form. Unlike fire, which transforms, water, which flows, and air, which moves, Earth offers us a different quality: presence and grounding.

Earth relates to stability, the body, matter, nourishment, and building. It reminds us that spirituality can also exist in concrete things: caring for the body, organizing a space, tending a plant, preparing food, or simply feeling your feet on the ground.

To root yourself doesn't mean staying still. A tree grows precisely because it has roots capable of supporting it while its branches reach outward.

๐ŸŒฑ The body as territory

Much of spiritual practice happens through the mind: thoughts, visualizations, intentions, and symbols. Earth directs attention elsewhereโ€”to the body.

Feeling your feet on the ground, noticing the weight of your own body, and observing your breath without trying to change it are simple ways to return to the present.

This awareness can also transform how we move through moments of restlessness. Rather than immediately seeking an answer or solution, we can first recognize where we are and reconnect with what is tangible.

For this portal, we'll use Earth itself as part of the ritual.

๐ŸŒฟ The ritual elements

You will need:

  • a small container with clean soil;
  • a stone or crystal of your choice;
  • a plant, leaf, or small seed;
  • a white or green candle.

The elements don't need to be rare or special. The intention is to work with what represents matter in a simple and conscious way.

๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ Grounding Ritual

Choose a quiet place.

Place the container with soil in front of you and position the candle beside it, keeping a safe distance. Light the candle.

Hold the stone between your hands and take a few slow breaths.

Then, place both feet firmly on the ground. Notice the contact of your feet with the surface. Imagine your body finding stability from this connection.

Place the stone on the soil and keep your hands near the container.

Remain in silence for a few minutes, feeling the weight of your body and watching the flame.

When you feel you've completed the practice, say:

"I am present in my body.

I recognize what sustains me.

I strengthen my roots and walk with stability.

I belong to my own body and honor the matter that sustains me.

From a firm foundation, I can grow."

Afterward, plant the seed or place the small plant in the soil. The stone can remain in the container as an object of contemplation for the coming days. Safely extinguish the candle.

๐ŸŒ Earth is also matter

The connection with Earth doesn't need to be limited to the ritual moment.

It appears in what we build daily: our home, our food, our body, our work, our objects, and the spaces we choose to inhabit. This is why the Earth element brings an important dimension to spiritual practice: intention must find matter to exist.

A desire can remain only in thought, but when it takes concrete action, it begins to be part of reality.

Tending a plant, preparing a meal, organizing a space, or accomplishing an important task can also carry this quality of presence when we do these activities consciously.

๐ŸŒฑ What this fourth portal teaches

Fire brought courage to act.

Water taught the movement of release.

Air brought clarity to perceive.

Earth now offers a foundation to sustain.

After moving energy, emotions, and thoughts, we need a place where all of this can settle.

Earth reminds us that growth also requires roots. There is no need to rush.

A seed doesn't need to look like a tree to be growing.

Contact with nature should be done with respect for the environment and without removing protected species or causing unnecessary harm.
