What Pluto Holds Within

While the planet of will is retrograde, I’m sharing some of its less obvious sides

The deeper I go into astrology, the less surprised I am by seemingly random coincidences. This time, I felt an overwhelming desire to talk about Pluto right now — and not by chance.

At the moment, Pluto is retrograde (this period will last until October 16, 2026), and the planet’s energy is turned inward, inviting us to reconsider our deepest foundations. I’ve already written about Pluto’s retrograde period here.

At first glance, Pluto is an outer planet, and most of us naturally work first and foremost with the personal planets — the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars — whose influence we tend to feel intuitively and in everyday life.

And if this distant Pluto isn’t connected to the personal planets in your natal chart, why pay attention to it at all? After all, it speaks to collective will, power, and the transformation of entire communities, right?

That’s true… but not entirely. And here’s why.

We all have different levels of knowledge and experience, so I want to tell you about the sides of Pluto that, for a long time, were far from obvious to me.

And of course, I’d love to hear about your own experience with this planet in the comments.

So, let’s begin.

Pluto is NOT about crises — it is about our powerful ability to adapt to them

When people talk about Pluto and the 8th house, which it rules, we often hear the same words: crises, trials, disasters. It can start to sound as though the planet itself is some kind of villain bringing misfortune into our lives. But that is not what Pluto is about.

Pluto is not a planet of destruction. It is an immense resource of adaptation, transformation, and inner strength.

In unexpected and extreme circumstances, a strong Pluto in the natal chart can take the reins of our lives into its steel grip and begin directing the entire process. Pluto helps us not merely survive, but transform through circumstances we do not face every day. It is a rescuer planet.

How does that sound to you?

Pluto and the Mother archetype: from the Greek Persephone to the Slavic Baba Yaga

Here is another less obvious but essential point: in reality, we encounter this “higher and distant” planet at the very first moment of our lives — at birth.

When the uterus pushes a baby into the world, we experience our first crisis: the loss of that safe, ideal environment where we had blissfully “lived” in our mother’s womb for nine months.

And then: “Welcome to the world!” It is cold, bright, loud; you have to breathe on your own and cry to ask for food.

This is pure Pluto energy: passing through a narrow tunnel, the death of an old comfort and the birth of a new self.

This is where archetypes become important. In Greek mythology, Pluto (Hades) abducts Persephone and takes her into the Underworld. But if we look deeper, this is a story of initiation: the girl dies to one role — that of the daughter — and is born into another, becoming the Queen of the Underworld. Persephone’s mother, Demeter, embodies the archetype of the “life-giver,” but it is Pluto who gives Persephone power. This is the moment when the maternal womb becomes the “grave” of the old self and the cradle of the new one.

In Slavic tradition, we can see a similar archetype in the figure of Baba Yaga. Baba Yaga is an ancient chthonic figure, mistress of the forest and guardian of the boundary between the world of the living, Yav, and the world of the dead, Nav. She is a Plutonian guide. She is not simply an “evil old woman”: she tests the hero, “cooks” them in her oven, removes the old skin — a symbol of ego death — and releases them renewed. This is the archetype of the mother who does not coddle, but tempers and strengthens.

In this way, Pluto manifests through feminine figures who guide us through initiation. Through trials in which we meet our fears and our shadows.

We part with something that has been holding us back: the illusion of weakness, the habit of making ourselves convenient for others, false security.

And on the other side, there is a chance to develop a strong inner core. Authority over our own life and a deep sense of support that comes from within, rather than from the outside.

Pluto is a powerful generator of our energy and vitality

When we talk about life force, we usually mention the Sun. And rightly so: it represents our individuality and creative potential.

But in moments of crisis, in those “borderline” states, we simply cannot do without powerful Pluto, the great adapter.

Energy is often called the main currency of the world: our health, well-being, and overall vitality depend on it. And Pluto, which is also associated with sexuality, can act as a powerful generator of energy drawn from that very sexuality.

This is why sexuality is often connected with material abundance, magnetism, attractiveness, and physical vitality.

In short: a strong Pluto in the natal chart can mean an influx of life force, magnetism, vitality, resilience in the face of life’s blows, and the ability to navigate even the most difficult crises.

How to distinguish a healthy expression of Pluto from a destructive one

Theory is one thing, but what does this actually look like in real life? Let’s look at a few examples.

Life situation: Losing a job or money

Strong Pluto:

The person sees it as a kind of “clearing”: something old has left to make space for something more profitable. The native mobilizes and, within a month or two, finds a better option.

Weak Pluto:

The person freezes, feels devalued, and contracts inward. They begin saving money to an absurd degree, see themselves as a failure, and cannot take a single step toward something new.

Life situation: Conflict with a partner, a breakup, or betrayal

Strong Pluto:

The person goes through the pain, but clearly feels inside: “This is changing me. I am becoming wiser.” The native transforms resentment into personal strength, draws clear boundaries, and leaves the relationship with the feeling that they have gained something valuable — knowledge about themselves.

Weak Pluto:

The person tolerates humiliation and fears that “without him/her, I don’t exist.” The native allows themselves to be manipulated and loses themselves in the partner. Or, on the contrary, they erupt into overwhelming jealousy, control, and rage, destroying everything to the ground and then feeling empty and guilty.

Life situation: Problems with sexuality and energy

Strong Pluto:

The person experiences their sexuality as a natural source of life force. The native feels that even when tired, they have an inner “generator” that can switch on when needed. Sex is neither shameful nor an obligation, but a resource and a source of energy.

Weak Pluto:

The person feels shame or disgust toward their own sexual nature. The native suppresses their desires and sees them as “dirty” or dangerous. As a result, they may experience chronic apathy; money and health can seem to be “draining away,” while the body may begin to signal through illness.

What next?

I feel that with this conversation about Pluto, we have only just begun.

I would like to write a series of articles about how we can work with its energy more consciously.

But your feedback is very important to me. First, I want to understand how interesting and resonant this topic feels to you.

Why does this topic feel so personal and sensitive to me?

I am dealing with a women’s health condition, I am being treated by doctors, and I follow their recommendations.

At the same time, through astrology, I am exploring my Pluto conjunct Venus in the 6th house of my natal chart to see my own blind spots: where I may not have allowed myself the right to be vulnerable, where I suppressed my feminine nature, and where I accumulated tension for years that may now be seeking expression through the body.

If you’re interested in following my journey, let me know.

Your feedback is my guide

Every response from you matters to me — every like and every comment. It tells me whether I should keep talking about the things that matter to me and may also be useful to you.

Please tell me in the comments:

  • Would you like to explore more deeply how to work with Pluto’s energy based on its placement in your natal chart?
  • Does talking about women’s health in the context of astrology give you a greater sense of support and understanding, or does it make you feel more anxious? Would you like me to share my personal story of the diagnosis and my astrological analysis?

Thank you so much for your comment, your interest, and your kind wishes for my healing journey 🙏🏻 Your support means the world to me! ❤️‍🩹 Pluto conjunct the Moon in Libra in the 5th house—what an fascinating placement! Would you say that you are a person with an incredibly strong, deep intuition? Out of all the facets of Pluto that I wrote about in my article, is there something specific you would like to know more about for yourself? For example, looking at my own Pluto placement, I now understand that it’s no coincidence I’ve always craved recognition and attention! 😁 My Pluto is in the 6th house, and it forms a trine with Jupiter in the 11th house. For a long time, I felt so ashamed of the fact that being in the spotlight mattered to me and that I wanted recognition. 🤫I am so happy to have you on this journey with me! 💫
