Pluto Retrograde, Week 3
Article · 5 min read ·
What You Built on Unstable Ground

A note before we begin: This piece moves through themes of identity, belief systems, and the honest examination of what’s been holding parts of your life in place. It’s direct but not heavy. If you’re in a particularly tender or destabilized period, read at your own pace. There’s no rush. This work will wait for you.
By week three of Pluto’s retrograde, the work has gone deeper.
Week one surfaced what had been waiting. Week two returned things that felt finished. Now the retrograde is asking a different kind of question, one about structure rather than contents. Not what you’ve been carrying, but what you’ve been carrying it on.
This is the week it starts asking about foundations.
The Ground Beneath the Ground
Most of us don’t examine our foundations until something starts to shift. That’s not a flaw. It’s practical. When the floor is holding, there’s no reason to pull it up. You live your life on top of it and trust it the way you trust anything that hasn’t given way yet.
Pluto retrograde moves into the substructure. The beliefs you built your choices on. The version of yourself your identity has been organized around. The story you’ve been telling about your life that keeps a truer story slightly out of reach.
Foundations aren’t visible the way other things are. You don’t notice them until you sit down heavily and something shifts beneath you. Then you have a choice: move to a different spot and pretend the shift didn’t happen, or look at what’s underneath.
What Unstable Ground Looks Like
It doesn’t announce itself. It tends to feel like:
A relationship described in terms of potential rather than reality. The possibility of what it could be has been load-bearing. And the honest question is whether the reality can hold the weight that’s been placed on it.
An identity that was accurate once and isn’t anymore. Still introducing yourself as the person you were a few years ago, because the newer version doesn’t have clear language yet. The old identity is a structure you’ve outgrown and are still living inside.
A belief doing a lot of work without examination. Something absorbed early, taken as true because it came from someone who was supposed to know, that organized a significant portion of your choices and that you’ve never actually tested directly.
A way of living built on what you thought you were supposed to want. This one tends to surface as a specific flatness. Not distress, exactly. Something quieter. The absence of the spark you were promised would arrive if you followed the right path. You followed it. And it feels like standing in someone else’s house.
The Choice Pluto Is Offering
Pluto doesn’t come to take things from you. It comes to show you what’s already hollow, what’s been costing more to maintain than it’s worth. The invitation isn’t destruction. It’s the controlled kind. The kind you choose.
There’s a real difference between a building that collapses unexpectedly and one the owner decides to take down.
Both result in rubble. In the first, you’re standing in the wreckage with no plan for what’s next. In the second, you chose the timing. You cleared the contents first. You were the one who made the call.
Pluto retrograde is offering you the second option. The chance to see the unstable ground before it gives way. That’s genuinely a gift, even when it doesn’t feel like one.
A Practice for This Week
These prompts are honest and they go somewhere real. Move through them at a pace that works for you. If anything surfaces that feels too large to sit with alone, that’s a good signal to bring it to a therapist or someone you trust.
Sit with whatever has been feeling hollow or effortful. You’ll know what it is. It’s been asking for your attention.
What did I build this on? Let the first answer arrive, then ask again. The first answer is usually the presentable version. The second or third tends to be truer.
When did I lay that foundation? How old was I? Most unstable foundations were built by younger versions of you working with incomplete information. That isn’t failure. It was appropriate to where you were. It held for as long as it could. You don’t have to start from a place of judgment.
If I were building this now, from where I actually stand, would I build it the same way? Take your time with this one. There’s no pressure to act on the answer immediately. Noticing is already the work. That’s enough for this week.
What Gets Built After
Things built on honest foundations are less exhausting to live in. The maintenance cost of something built on what’s actually true about you is lower than the maintenance cost of something built on who you thought you were supposed to be.
That’s not the same as easier. It’s more like: more yours. More sustainable.
Sometimes that’s enough to make it worth the looking.
The retrograde runs through October 22. You’re about three weeks in. There’s no rush, but the examination is underway. The only question is whether you’re participating on purpose.
