Cope with Anger in a Healthy Way

Throughout the day, a person experiences a whole range of emotions: from apathy to euphoria.

However, there are some emotions that can render us ineffective and disrupt our plans. Ager is one of them.

I need to make this clear:

There are no bad emotions. Each emotion gives us information that we need to learn to read.

When we are angry, we may say or do things that we will later be ashamed of. It is important to keep in mind that anger, like any emotion, lasts only up to 12 minutes.

So the best way to handle anger is:

Step 1. Become aware of your anger (becoming aware of your emotions is the most challenging phase; we can make a separate series of articles on awareness).

Step 2. Pause, drink some water and switch gears.

And 12 minutes later, your emotional state will get back to normal.

But it often happens that anger evolves into anxiety, fear or panic. These conditions can drag on for a long time, and sometimes become chronic in a person.

Techniques to bring yourself to a resource state:

  1. Expressive writing

Write down your feelings. This is essentially the same as speaking about them — voice your fears and put them on paper.
No need to think about the meaning of what you write. Just set a timer for 20 minutes and start writing down everything that bothers you, regardless of mistakes and punctuation.

  1. Switch to your body

Panic or anxiety “kicks” a person out of their body, so our mission is to return to it. To do this, you can start cleaning the apartment, wash the dishes, go have a massage, or play sports.
Any exercise is good: from yoga to working out at the gym.

We suggest you do the Lunar Exercises series, which we have picked for you at MoonX depending on which sign the Moon is.

Highly recommend therapy. Emotions don’t just go away, they get stored in your body until you feel and deal with them. Most likely there are other emotions that also need to be dealt with hiding under all your hurt and anger.

I'm going through it right now. I've been grinding my teeth for 3 hours now. Then I remembered this app having anger help. I am curious if you still feel the same way. I'm now for more than 2 years

I’ve been working on being aware of my emotions for a bit now. I’m in this weird spot where I know when my anger is about to get bad but still can’t prevent it from going fully into effect most of the times. By looking at it as of 12 minutes an emotions last I’m hoping I can finally be fully in control… that and also my new therapist, can’t believe it took me 9 years to get one!

If you are Neurodivergent (like ADHD, Autistic, or many other types on the overall spectrum) that can also make it more difficult to regulate emotions. But don’t give up. You’ve already stated that you’re making progress. Your progress is valid. Keep going. You can do it. And good on you for seeking therapy! I hope your therapist is a good fit for your journey! 😃

What about being driven to anger by the actions of your loved ones? Does anger serve a purpose for those to take notice? For me it’s something I eventually allow because as an emotion it is coming up and needs to vent. If I placate for 12 minutes- I suppose the language I choose to use ….I have had 12 mins to adjust to a message that is better received.
