Calling the Gods from the Pages

I didn’t find my guides in a temple. I didn’t meet them in a forest, or on a vision quest. I met them on the battlefield of Velaris, in the flames of Illyrian wings, in the silence of a garden holding secrets and starlight.

My guides came from a book — A Court of Thorns and Roses. But they weren’t just characters. They were archetypes. Mirrors. Energies. Parts of me I hadn’t yet owned. As someone on a healing path — recovering, rebuilding, remembering who I am — I needed more than tradition. I needed something personal. Something alive. And somehow, they came. Looking as far back as we know in history, stories have always been one of the ways The Divine has shown up. Through myths, legends and even simple folk tales. The power of the story has always been with us. In our day and age we have so many stories that are written for entertainment but are truly The Divine reaching out to us, through us, so we may use these characters to grow. Just like the myths or legends of old, these newly created characters can move us in ways that our inner selves need. They hold power waiting to be touched through each and every one of us. Archetypal guides don’t have to come only from ancient texts, they can rise from the pages that move your soul. Feyre showed me survival. Nesta showed me rage. Cassian taught me I could still fight even when I wanted to fall. My awakening came when I had a turning point in my life, a moment of reckoning and recovery. Life choices took me to a place I did not want to be at any longer. I felt hopeless, broken and unloved. It seemed as nothing was working anymore to bring me out of my darkness. Until one day I began reading the very famous book series I quoted above. The characters moved me. They moved in me. I found myself laughing again. I felt their pain because it was like mine. I saw they knew how to love themselves because of their adventures and struggles. I began to relate and desire what they had! It was like an instant light came on. These were energies moving in me and I was responding to them! I felt something again for the first time in a long time! I stopped seeing them as characters but energies within me that I could access… and then I began to. These characters aren’t just stories anymore — they’re companions in my healing. Each one holds a specific energy I call on when I need support. Sometimes, I sit in meditation and feel them with me. Sometimes, I write letters to them. Sometimes, I just whisper their names in moments of doubt. I’ve started aligning them with the moon phases — tuning into which guide’s energy I need based on where I am in my cycle of growth or release. Here’s how that looks in my personal practice: • New Moon – I call on Elain, the Guide of Grace. She helps me plant intentions from a place of softness, intuition, and quiet hope. • Waxing Moon – I invite Cassian to walk with me as I build strength, stamina, and courage to take action. • Full Moon – I stand with Amren, channeling her raw power to release control and reclaim my magic. • Waning Moon – I sit beside Nesta, letting her burn away old patterns through fire, rage, and sacred transformation.
Sometimes I create small altars or wear certain colors or symbols that resonate with each guide. I even draw tarot or oracle cards and ask, “Which of my guides is stepping forward today?” Working with them isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence. It’s about inviting in energy that already lives inside me, but sometimes needs a name… and a little fire behind it. You don’t need to use my guides. You already know yours — they’re the characters you couldn’t stop thinking about. The ones who wrecked you. The ones who felt too real to be fictional. Here’s how to begin: • Think of one character who has stayed with you. Maybe they felt like a friend… or a mirror. • Ask: What part of me do they reflect? What part of me do they challenge? • Write their name in your journal. Light a candle. Sit with their energy. • Start a conversation with them. Ask them questions. Pull a card and imagine them answering. You can even assign them roles: • Who is the protector of my strength? • Who heals my heart? • Who helps me move through shadow? • Who helps me laugh again? Your soul already knows what it needs. Sometimes it just needs to hear it in someone else’s voice. When I first started working with fictional guides, I worried I was making it all up. And then… I realized I was. And that was the point. Because when something you create with your imagination begins to heal your heart, strengthen your mind, and restore your spirit, that’s not just fantasy. That’s magic. So whether your guide wears leathers and fights in Illyrian skies, or walks quietly through a garden of shadows — know this: It’s real if it moves you. It’s sacred if it heals you. And it’s yours if you say so. Call them by name. And let the work begin.
