🌕 Moon and Food
For centuries, different cultures have observed how the Moon influences human behavior, agriculture, sleep… and even appetite, digestion, and emotional states.
Today, both science and Ayurveda are starting to build bridges between these ancient ideas and what happens within us.

A study published in Current Biology https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23891110 revealed that during the full moon, deep sleep can decrease by up to 30%, and melatonin levels drop significantly (Cajochen et al., 2013).
Lunar phases have also been linked to emotional and behavioral changes in people with mood disorders (Wehr, 2018).
Our bodies are made up of 70% water… and the Moon moves the tides. So how could it not affect us? Just as it pulls on oceans, researchers are exploring whether the Moon also affects bodily fluids—though there’s no full scientific consensus yet. However, studies in chronobiology support that natural rhythms, including lunar ones, do influence our hormonal and metabolic functions.
🌑 New Moon: Cleansing and Reset
Main energy: introspection, cleansing, fertile emptiness.
This phase is all about looking within, letting go of what no longer serves, and creating space for what’s new. It’s a time for self-care and inner quiet.
Ayurveda: Ideal to balance Kapha, the dosha linked to heaviness, accumulation, and stagnation.
Recommended foods:
• Vegetable broths, light soups, herbal teas
• Gentle fasting if the body asks for it
• Hydrating and detoxifying foods like cucumber, celery, nettle tea
Avoid: Heavy meals, dairy, overly salty or sugary foods
Tip: This is a great time to slow down — in food and in thoughts. Listen to your body.
🌓 First Quarter: Activation and Growth
Main energy: motivation, building, forward movement.
This phase brings momentum and drive. It’s a good time to start new projects and move toward your goals.
Ayurveda: Supports the movement of Vata, the dosha of air and mental activity.
Recommended foods:
• Plant-based proteins (legumes, tofu, nuts)
• Energizing fruits like banana and mango
• Grounding roots like sweet potato or beetroot
Avoid: Excess caffeine, refined flours, processed snacks
Tip: Fuel your body without overstimulating it. Build your body, your ideas, your path.
🌕 Full Moon: Expansion and Sensitivity
Main energy: fullness, emotion, openness.
The full moon amplifies everything—emotions, intuition, and physical energy. It’s a time of heightened sensitivity and deep feeling.
Ayurveda: A critical moment to care for Pitta, the dosha of fire and intensity.
Recommended foods:
• Light and fresh meals: steamed vegetables, juicy fruits
• Gentle grains like quinoa, millet, or brown rice
• Herbal teas like fennel, chamomile, or rose
Avoid: Spicy food, fried items, alcohol, excess salt or stimulants
Tip: During this phase, your body may retain more water and your appetite can increase. Eat with awareness and kindness.
🌗 Last Quarter: Integration and Release
Main energy: closure, letting go, preparation.
This is the time to release, integrate, and rest before a new cycle begins. The energy turns inward—it's a moment of physical and emotional cleansing.
Ayurveda: Supports balance between Vata and Pitta—ideal for releasing excess heat and activity.
Recommended foods:
• Light stews, baked vegetables, whole grains
• Digestive teas and gentle spices (turmeric, cumin, mild ginger)
• Eat less, but better—tune into what you truly need
Avoid: Automatic or emotional eating habits
Tip: Let go of what no longer nourishes you—on your plate and in your heart.
Just as the Moon moves through its phases, you shift too.
Ayurveda teaches that we each have a unique constitution—the doshas—and understanding them helps you:
• Choose the right foods for each lunar phase
• Understand your emotions without judgment
• Regulate your energy and digestion more naturally
