As the Goddess of both the Underworld and Spring, Persephone represents the balance between darkness and light, death and rebirth.

In mythology, some stories say she is abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld, where she becomes his queen. Others say she went willingly; this is the story that I believe. Each year, she returns to the surface, bringing life back to the earth. This recurring journey mirrors the changing of the seasons, making Persephone a powerful astrological archetype for transformation, renewal, and personal growth.
Persephone’s return marks the arrival of Spring—a time of awakening, fertility, and new beginnings. Her myth explains why the earth experiences Winter when she is in the underworld and why it flourishes upon her return. Astrologically, she embodies the cycles of life, showing how we must go through periods of darkness to reach renewal and personal evolution. It is believed throughout the myths that her mother Demeter / (Ceres), Goddess of the Harvest was so upset when Persephone was in the underworld, that it led to creating Autumn and Winter. Then when Persephone would return she would create Spring and Summer leading back into Autumn when she would go back to the underworld.
The asteroid Persephone (399) in astrology offers insight into themes of power shifts, transformation, and one’s relationship with both endings and new beginnings. Depending on its placement in a birth chart, it can reveal: • Where we experience cycles of loss and rebirth • How we navigate change and personal empowerment • Our connection to the unseen, intuitive, or mystical realms! Astrological Connections • Scorpio & Pluto: Persephone’s connection to Scorpio and Pluto (Hades’ ruling planet) highlights themes of deep transformation, mystery, and empowerment through struggle. • Virgo & Ceres: As the daughter of Demeter (Ceres), Persephone shares ties to Virgo, symbolizing purity, duty, and the transition between innocence and maturity. • 8th House & the Underworld: The 8th house governs themes of death, rebirth, and hidden power, aligning with Persephone’s journey between realms.
In astrology, Persephone reminds us that transformation is necessary for growth. Just as Winter must come before Spring, we must embrace life’s challenges to emerge stronger. By understanding Persephone’s placement in our charts, we gain insight into our own cycles of loss and renewal, learning how to navigate them with grace and power. If you’re seeking personal transformation, look to asteroid Persephone in your chart. She may just reveal where your greatest rebirth awaits! For me Persephone is in my 5th house in the placement of Pisces. Meaning I am here to embrace my creative and romantic power, learning that true transformation comes through both surrender and self-expression.
